We have been using a dream blanket since our daughter was the same age as your son without any problems. I feel like those thinner blankets are easier for them to get caught up in, that situation was certainly a tragedy I think the recommendation of 1 is a good one. She loves being covered up and pulls it back over several times over during the night even during the summer.

Last winter (from about 11 - 16 months) we put DD to bed in cotton pajamas - pants and a long-sleeved tee - plus socks, with a footed fleece sleeper on top.

I think you're confusing swaddle sacks (a sleep aid) with sleep sacks (basically a sleeping bag with arm holes).

My child runs warm and always kicks the blankets off anyway. So I would just use a fleece footie pajama and put him in the crib. But if your child does not run warm then I would consider a sleep sack. We never used those.

My son is 3.5 and still kicks off the blankets more than half the time.

Another vote for a sleep sack. If you're in between sizes, go for a larger size, maybe so your LO doesn't feel trapped.

As for temperature, LO sleeps at 77 degrees, no fan, no humidity, in cotton long sleeved footed PJs and TWO cotton sleep sacks. Kid loves being warm.

My almost 12 month old has slept in a fleece sleeper every night of her life - even during the hot summer that we are having! But we always have air conditioning on and the ceiling fan in her room constantly moves the air. So long sleeve, footed fleece it is!

Never really used sleep sacks with DD1... Always had long sleeves/long pants one or two piece in the summer, and fleece in the winter, both with short sleeve or sleeveless onesie under.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: My 3 year old still doesn't use a blanket at night and we keep our rooms cold. We have always done long sleeved/pants cotton sleepers and socks and haven't had any issues. Sometimes his hands are cold when he wakes up but the rest of him is warm!

I would also suggest a sleep sack! DD used one until she was at least 2, I think.

If not, then I'd try out long sleeve footed fleece sleepers. I personally don't love fleece but DD never really seemed to have a problem with it, and actually last year she tended to pick her fleece PJs more often than the expensive thick organic cotton ones that I bought her anyway.

You could also try flying squirrel like a pp suggested. We use a zipadeezip on DS and I like that it's similar to a sleep sack and provides an extra layer.

We use the sleep sacks from Vaenait Baby (it's a Korean brand with a store on eBay). Their sacks have feet holes so kids can easily walk in them. We have them in every weight, from an ultra thin cotton for summer to a thicker sweatshirt weight cotton to fleece. We bought them bigger than necessary, mostly so that the legs would cover our sons' feet in the bed, so they last a long time.

We use sleep sacks, it was just a way to keep them warm. It doesn't really prevent movement. LOs walk and crawl all over in them. It did keep LO1 from climbing out of his crib which was nice, but then he just learned how to undo the zipper when he really wanted out. We keep their room 78° and that is plenty cool for them in long sleeve cotton PJs and a light cotton sleep sack. The ones we have for the summer are jersey.

@travellingbee: Ditto here. My kid is 4 now and even now, she won't stay under a blanket. She sleeps in long PJs and socks all year long.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: even though they feel cool to the touch, it doesn't mean that they actually feel cold. My daughter is exactly how you're describing, and any time I've tried to put anything warmer on her, she's very uncomfortable. If the room is at 75 and you have long PJs and socks on, I bet you LO is perfectly comfortable. Kids tend to run warmer temp-wise, too.

I agree with the others on a sleep sack. My son still wears one at 2. He can sleep with or without it but since we have AC he wears a light one during the summer! Another perk is it keeps them from trying to climb out of their crib!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: sleepsacks to me have always just been a wearable blanket, not a sleep aid. DD is 2.5 and still uses a sleep sack because she doesn't keep her blanket on. We have light weight cotton ones but also fleece ones for winter.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: We just do longsleeve sleepers, even in the summer, because of the air conditioning. Our 19-month-old won't keep a blanket on him anyway so having a loose blanket wouldn't help.

...you never swaddled or used sleep sacks.

After the tragic strangling death of the 7 month old DH is even more adamant about not using blankets, pillows, or loveys (in our case a Build a Bear) in the crib with our 15 month old.

However, I think he's cold in his crib. We use a humidifier, an air purifier, and keep the A/C at 75 and it clicks on through out the night. This morning when I got him out of his crib his arm was cold to the touch (he was in a short sleeve sleeper). As we approach winter, I want to make sure he definitely stays warm at night. We have always just put LO to sleep in a zippered cotton sleeper and if need be covered his feet. He sleeps on his belly usually with his feet tucked under and bum in the air, but sometimes stretches completely out.

I'm racking my brain here and coming up blank. Is fleece a game changer? WWYD
