We rock to sleep, often with white noise. Occassionally, he'll fall asleep if I lie beside him (me in our bed, him in the sidecar crib), stroking his hands while he sucks his pacifier. Occassionally...

I was never comfortable with CIO, but I think there is a big difference between fussing and crying. If my LO isfussing, I wait a bit before going in to see if he will settle. If it escalates into a full on cry, we go in and feed. Well, actually soothe now that he is over a year. I'm sure it doesn't work for every kid, but it worked well for us.

@mediagirl: this is what we did for falling asleep - except sitting in the glider next to the crib and patting her or singing if needed. She was never too fussy about it though and would usually just chat to her (low stim, no movement) mobile and then fall asleep.

Wait it out. That's what we did. It took almost two years to sttn but that's just our parenting style and I'm glad we did it that way.

We did "pick up/put down" and not "cry it out" allowed fussing but not upset screaming/crying and stayed in the room with him. We got info from Happiest Baby/Toddler on the Block and the No Cry Sleep Solution.

@Peasinapod: I would look at the baby whisperer books or no cry sleep solution. We never did CIO but these had some good gentler suggestions. The getting ready to roll over might be contributing. Baby sleep is hard!

Thanks guys :) the sites are helpful. I've been co sleeping about half the night with her when I'm just too tired to rock / nurse. But I don't actually sleep that well in bed with her. She has been trying to roll from back to front so maybe that's been keeping her up at night!

Co sleep. We all get sleep that way. Drowsy and awake doesn't exist in my house! DS1 has never done it and DS2 has done it a handful of times.

I agree with @blackbird in looking into if it's a regression or wonder week. We never did CIO. We did what I consider a gentle sleep training technique. We would stay in the room with her while she fell asleep (sleepy but awake). Sometimes we would be in there for an hour, sometimes less than that. I would lay on the ground with my hand in her crib so she would know I was there and could grab it if she needed to. She was a little older when we did this. Before we did this, I just dealt with the wake-ups.

No specific advice because different things work for different people, but I really like this site for a variety of perspectives, not *just* CIO or *just* no cry...
https://childsleepscience.wordpress.com/
They also offer sleep consults but I think just the blog is really helpful and I refer back every time we hit a regression.
(We did do CIO so no help there).

at that age, is it a regression? we didn't do CIO until close to 6 months. E was still being swaddled at 4.5 months and we tried out the merlin magic sleepsuit, which was awesome. every time she moved, she woke herself up. I love this site: http://www.troublesometots.com/3-6-month-baby-sleep-survival-guide/

I am not a fan of cio and never thought I would even consider it. But my 18week old baby can not be put down 'sleepy but awake ' and if I nurse her to sleep she's up again in 40min.

So for mums who refused to let their little one cio, what did you do?
