LO has the same thing right now. But she's had it a lot longer (15 days now). I'm planning to bring her back in on Saturday...

You know your baby best, so try to follow your own gut. My MIL makes a big deal about everything with the kids and tries to make me to give them tylenol for a runny nose.....say what? For colds, we really just ride it out and try to keep them comfortable. If there's a drastic change in their ability to eat or sleep, they get a really high fever, or there are signs of having trouble breathing, we'd call the ped. But I was totally a mess the first time my kids got sick too :)

The cough isn't a big deal. I advise parents to return when the baby isn't making normal wet diapers because they are not able to eat enough to stay hydrated or respiratory distress (head bobbing, nasal flaring, retractions)... And then say if there are warning bells going off in your head that you can't put a finger on, give us a call. But you don't want to be admitted to the hospital if you can help it!

@Meggo5: How old is your baby? The best non medicinal remedies for a young baby with a cough/cold are; saline spray, steam, nasal aspirator like nosefriday snotsucker and yes it does take time to see improvement.
My baby got colds a lot when she was very young and her doctor was also very reluctant to give any meds to her

@Meggo5: I am lucky enough that my dad is a NP. When ever I get worried about DS, I run it by him before calling the ped. When we lived across the state from my dad I called the doc a lot. I am sure they were tired of me but I just remind myself I know my child best.

@Meggo5: So, I ran into this with my own mother when my LO had a cough/cold.

I think the issue was that back in the day, they were able to give babies cough medicines and they were happy to prescribe antibiotics for the smallest thing. We all know better now.

My mom did the same thing, pressuring me to take her to the doctor, and I finally said, please go to the store and try to buy cough medicine for a baby. Sure enough she came home empty handed. There is nothing you can give them OTC.

Times have just changed and I believe its for the better even though no one likes to see a sick baby.

as the daughter of a pediatrician, i can tell you the dr may or may not think you are being neurotic, but he won't care, and he's totally used to it. It's his job! and he'd rather you be a bit neurotic than miss something major, because sometimes it's hard to tell which way a cold is going. I would think you should just clarify with him what you should expect (how long until it gets better, when should you worry) so that you know what's normal and what's cause for concern. you could probably have just had a quick phone call with the doc rather than bringing your LO back in, but i wouldn't stress over it!

Thanks, all. I generally think of myself as a relatively laid back parent too and I think I was just thrown by my mother in law's fears. She always makes me feel (and this is a whole problem on its own) like I am missing something with the baby and that I should be doing something differently. I go from being cool, calm, and collected about the baby to being completely paranoid, in 5 minutes. I think I need to address this issue separately.

Our pediatric nurses are awesome. This was something that our doc told me very early on was that I should never be afraid to call and talk to the nurses and that I will likely get to know them better than I know the doc. I usually can run over the issues with the nurse and get advice on what I should do next or if it warrants a visit.

I've learned that I need to ask a lot of questions of the doctor as a reminder that I don't know everything. In this case when the doc told you it would last 5-7 days, I've learned to ask about what I should expect as far as progression in that time period and what I need to do next or if it persists beyond the time period.

And I think the doctor and staff are generally pretty understanding of first time parent nuerosis.

For me personally? Honestly, a tiny bit neurotic. I'm a very laid-back parent though. There is little that doctors can do for colds and such in babies. They just kind of have to get over it in their own time.

We went through this with C when she was about 5 months old. We both got really sick and had bad coughs.

Although I wouldn't have called back to make another appointment unless there was a drastic change--you know your baby better than anyone (and better than your MIL), I think you should do whatever makes you feel comfortable and at ease.

Will the pediatrician think you're neurotic? Could be, but he's most likely used to it.

Did he say the cough would get worse over the next 5-7 days? that would be my big question for him.

Our little C has his first cold! He developed a cough earlier in the week and has gotten progressively more congested and "snotty." We have actually taken two trips to the pediatrician already-- one last Friday when I was concerned this was starting and one again yesterday when the cough got worse. The pediatrician, who I like and trust completely, diagnosed it as bronchiolitis and said that he will be fine, but that this may last for 5-7 days. He did not feel that any medication was in order.

Fast forward to last night when my mother-in-law was staying with us. She was extremely concerned about LO's health and kept telling me to bring him back to the dr today. I was not sure that was the right thing to do (since I don't want it to appear that I don't trust the doctor) but she kept saying that "something wasn't right" and that I should have the baby checked again. I have some issues with my mil but that's besides the point!

I took LO to his babysitter this morning as usual and have been checking in frequently. The cough seems to be getting worse and she said he's a bit fussier than usual. I decided to call the doctor again and he said that he's be happy to check the baby out again, but I also got the sense that he was saying "lady, I told you yesterday that this would happen!" and that he probably thinks I'm just a pain in the butt first time parent.

I made an appointment for later this afternoon and am just concerned (in addition to my LO's health, of course!) that the pediatrician thinks I am nuts. I don't want it to come across that I am undermining his expertise, but I just want to make sure my baby is OK!

Would you have called back and made another appointment?
