Don't get the dog. We adopted a husky/Shepard mix while I was pregnant. I love her to pieces but she is very energetic and high maintenance. If I could have a do over I would want a more low key breed. But we made a commitment to her so we are keeping her (she is a year).

My brother and I were just talking about this sort of situation last night. I'd explain your position to the neighbor. Say that you'd really like the dog, but would like to try for a few days with the option of bringing the dog back - because you are also concerned for your baby's safety. If the dog LIKES the baby without being overly excited around the little one, then I'd give it a go.

My parents did that with the first dog they tried out, and the dog was NOT suited to be around a five year old - they brought the dog back a few hours later. The second dog (that we brought home within a month of the first) did have the right termperament.

I say yes only because puppies are so much work. He could have a hard time adjusting to your home. The way you would train him could be completely different from what your neighbors were doing. I'm not a big fan of the puppy stage and I don't even have kids. I think having to crate train, leash train, etc with an infant to take care of would be 100x more stressful.

I would probably take the dog too but like @artbee said I am a little crazy with stuff like that too. I currently have two dogs. I also have four children under four. To be honest it's easier to have a new born with dogs than toddlers as far as adjustment goes. A puppy and a new born I could handle, a puppy and a toddler would be trickier.

I'd want the dog too.... but I'm a little crazy when it comes to that stuff. That's the kind of dog DH wants so hopefully we'll be getting one in the future. Now we have a 7 year old German Shephard/Golden mix and we love him. He's great with LO.... but that's because he's getting old and is on prozac.

Is a 7 month old still a puppy? I've never had a dog before. DH and I were going to get a puppy now, too, but a million real dog people convinced us to wait--even if the dog was already housebroken!
So... I'd go for it, and I'd probably end up in over my head. Trust the dog people, don't get the dog yet.

Yes. :( I am a dog lover, but I wouldn't risk rehoming a dog with a small baby around. I agree with everything PP have said!

Yes, sadly. I couldn't imagine dealing with any adjustment issues pup may/would have and baby. Clearly you heart is in the right place, though. I would certainly offer to ask friends and family, so you know he would be going to a good home.

Don't get the dog!!! Puppies are so much work. And even if the dog seems sweet he is coming from an environment where he was fighting for territory and was unhappy so he may have some residual aggression and you just can't take that risk with a 120lb dog when you have a tiny baby.

Yes. I LOVE my dog and he's a calm 5 year old boxer and now that she's all over the floor and he's all over the floor it's tough. Especially as a puppy that would be really tough. I would wait till LO is at least a year and walking better.

So, my neighbor across the street is trying to rehome her 9-month old German Shepherd/Husky mix and she's willing to give him to us for free, with all of his stuff because their older dog doesn't get along with him.

Well... we have a 7 week old baby. :/ I really, really, really want a dog. I grew up with a lab/shepherd mix that my parents got when I was very small and it was so amazing growing up with pets. I want LO to have that same kind of life. We had already agreed that we are going to get a dog, but we were going to wait until next year when DH comes back from deployment and we were thinking a much smaller dog, like a Corgi....

Am I nuts for wanting to convince DH to get this dog? Am I nuts for wanting to get a 120lb German Shepherd with a newborn? It's really okay to tell me I am.

Oh, and the family the dog is coming from has a 2 year old little boy, so the dog has been around small kids.
