It's definitely a lot of work, but we went through a good rescue organization that set us up with an older (we think around 7 year old) dog who'd been tested around kids and dogs in foster homes and had never shown any signs of aggression or guarding or anything, and it has been great. The dog doesn't LOVE kids, so we're pretty vigilant about correcting LO when he doesn't treat the dog appropriately, but our dog is so incredibly chill and is very tolerant. (Plus, we let LO give him lots of treats, and LO is the one who feeds him every day). I'm definitely glad we went with an older dog who'd already been observed by foster homes. I don't think I could handle puppy stuff- not the energy, not the mouthiness, not the accidents. They just have so much energy, and so many sharp little teeth, and such mischief. I think most problems with older dogs come in when they've never, ever been around kids and then 4 years in, a baby is introduced. </p> <p>When we adopted our mutt we made sure he wasn't a "terrier" type and have aggressively socialized him with my nieces and any neighborhood kids - he has gone from scared, to skeptical, to obsessed with little people. So, fingers crossed, it'll be a relatively easy transition with him.</p> <p>Anyways, obviously it is different for everyone and every dog!
