You will notice when he starts to get sleepy earlier. DS is 4.5 months and now goes to bed at 9ish. 3 weeks ago he was still going to bed at 10-10:30. Now the last couple nights he is showing sleepy signs a bit sooner and I'm hoping will go down by 8:30. It is worse to try and force an earlier bedtime.

Thanks all! Sounds like an earlier bedtime will happen naturally as he gets a bit older. Glad I'm not screwing anything up :)

My LO would go down for the night between 11-12 for the first few months. We just went by his cues, and I didn't try to push a sleep schedule on him. As he got older, he wanted to go to bed earlier and earlier. Eventually he would go to bed around 6.

I'd say you are fine. I think A didn't start going to bed before 9 until almost two months? At 6 weeks, sleep is baby's choice in my opinion :)

I think every LO is different! My DD (at 6 weeks) went to sleep at 9-10 but my baby melts down if I keep her up past 8!

@septemberlove: yea, even after we figured out he was ready for "bed" earlier, we still sat and held him while he slept for hours & hung out until we were ready for bed. He was so snuggly and sweet - ack! I'm tearing up!

We didn't start putting him down earlier until around 3 months - gradually moved towards a 7 pm bedtime. Which gradually became later after 9 months and at 15 months its 730/8.

I'm impressed that you have a bedtime routine! That's all - no advice. LO goes to sleep around 9:30-10:30 usually at 6 weeks as well. I'd like to get her on a routine soon.

I don't worry about bad habits too much just yet. DS is only my baby for a fleeting moment, I break all the rules and do whatever makes us happy!

B usually goes to bed around 11, too. I'm interested in hearing responses because I go back to work in 2 weeks and would like him to go to bed earlier!

We used to put him to bed (change diaper, into jammies, swaddle, etc) in his co-sleeper when we went to bed at 9pm. Gradually we noticed that we were having to wake him up at 9 to do the routine, so we started it earlier when he was naturally tired (6-7pm).
So I don't think you need to start a routine earlier unless your guy is falling asleep and staying asleep earlier than 11pm. Leaving him in the co-sleeper with the monitor is fine - we did it!

I think do whatever is working for you as well. At that age my LO went to be at 11ish. Granted, I still have a night owl but nearing to 9pm now (at 6 months). To be honest, I think some babies just naturally start going to bed earlier as they age. I don't think you're creating any bad habits at that age!

I've been trying realllly hard to get LO to bed earlier (she's 5 weeks) but it doesn't seem to be happening. She nods off between 9-10, which I think is late, but she just isn't tired before that! We start her 'routine' of bath, nurse, swaddle at like 7. Aaand clearly I have no useful advice, just wanted to say you aren't alone! ;)

I think that's ok at 6 weeks. Lots of babies won't go to bed before 10 anyway at that age. Do whatever is working for you...

DS is 6 weeks old. Currently, we don't have a schedule since he's so young. We have a very loose routine of bath, swaddle, nurse, bed... and it seems to work (knock on wood!) because he'll sleep for his longest stretch once we put him to bed next to us in his little cosleeper.

I guess I'm wondering if I should start this little routine earlier, because he goes to bed when we go to bed, which is around 11 pm. Is it even worth a shot? I guess I'm nervous to leave him in the room by himself with a monitor because I've never done that before and he's so little! He doesn't STTN yet; he's up every 3-4 hours to eat.

How did you go about getting LO down for the night at an earlier time? When did you start? I'm afraid I'm doing something wrong by keeping him up so late with us.
