@Mrs.Someone: @T.H.O.U.: He is EBF but very large (19 pounds and 27+ inches long). So the doctor's rec was based on his size and weight. It seemed like a ton to me at the time (he needed closer to 6 oz at that age), but he happily slurps it down now. I think most babies are taking the same overall amount (30-35 oz) but the amount they can take at one time depends on size and development.

I always pace when feeding, so I can't figure out what's going on. She was starting to sleep longer stretches at night but has been waking up every 1-2 hrs the past couple days.

@Mrs.Someone: Remember BFing amounts of ounces will differ from FF amount of ounces.

@Little Misters Mom: 8oz?! Wow, I've never heard of a newborn taking that much. How many oz does he take a day? We offer 5oz at bedtime, otherwise 4oz if he takes a bottle instead of the breast.

@Pumpkin Pie: We started offering him more. At 8 weeks he seemed to still be hungry after a 4 oz bottle, and our ped told us DS could probably eat closer to 8 oz at a time (he only gets one bottle a day from DH). So we offered him 8 and he just seems to not stop himself on the bottle. He would basically eat whatever was offered . So we just had to experiment with amounts until we found the right balance. By about 12 or 13 weeks he was getting 7 ounces or so and stopped spitting up. I think it was a combination of his tummy getting bigger an also just his reflux diminishing.

DS went through a stage where it seemed like he was spitting up like a fountain. It passed pretty quickly.

Maybe you should try a different bottle, or hold her sitting up to help pace her? This is what my LC suggests: http://www.second9months.com/bottle-feeding-your-baby-sets-the-pace/

@Little Misters Mom: do you know why around 9-10 weeks your LO seemed to take more even if he wasn't hungry? My LO didn't do this before and I can't figure out why it suddenly changed.

We went through this issue around 9 or 10 weeks as well. He seemed hungry but would then spit up a ton (from both the breast and his one bottle of BM a day). What worked for us was to give some of the bottle, then when he got close to the normal amount of ounces, take it away and try to distract/soothe him with something else. If he couldn't be calmed with his usual stuff, we knew he was still hungry but most of the time he was just eating because it was there. By about 12 weeks we'd figured out the right amount of milk and his tummy got a little bigger and more developed. We also use Dr. Brown's natural flow bottles with Level 1 nipples to slow his drinking, which helped reduce spitting up.

I've been told it's basically impossible to overfed a breastfed baby, because the fat and nutrient content of the milk adapts. If she is taking formula, your doctor should be able to tell you the appropriate amount for her weight and age over a 24 hour period.

If she's spitting up I would pace her more and make sure she's really hungry.

Since last night my LO has been eating almost double what she normally eats. Usually when she is done with the bottle, she'll push it out with her tongue, but the past couple feedings she just eats and eats. I thought maybe it was a growth spurt, but then she ends up spitting up so much and tonight she vomited. Am I just over feeding her? If you are bottle feeding how do you know when its a growth spurt vs overfeeding? LO is 9 weeks.
