Thanks for the feedback everyone! I did not follow up and she finally answered me that we'll get it the first day of school

Just for clarification, I KNOW that most events are probably going to be cancelled, but she had told me that they were going to be releasing a calendar with the dates laid out just in case. Also, this isn't a school system with an administration; it is a small, privately owned school (as in, the teacher I was emailing is also the owner). That doesn't make it any less busy for her, certainly, but it's not a matter of getting the rest of the school on board, there's only one class

With that said, I hear you all. I've backed off.

@smuckers: Guess I’m the odd one out bc that would totally bother me too. I can’t just take off a random day with 2 weeks notice. My son’s preschool gives a yearly calendar with all special events listed. They still have their halloween party and field trip to the pumpkin patch on there but I’m assuming they will be cancelled. But I was able to arrange my work schedule in case they do happen. I would def want the schedule OR to know that there will not be any special events.

Agree with all the others. The non-answer is an answer.

It's a little annoying that they seem to be dodging your question instead of just saying "We don't know yet, sorry"...but I'm president of our school's PTO, and am admittedly getting really tired of answering/almost embarrassed to continue answering" questions related to usual events/activities with things like "We don't know", "not yet", "I have to wait for approval from..." or "we have to wait and see"...But it's unfortunately the truth right now.

Even pre covid we usually got the month calendars, on the first day of school or some not until the end of the first week. Especially events where you would have to take time off needs clearing from the whole school and that takes time to coordinate. If you’re a type A planner like me, it can be a huge thing but I would advise to let it go. This year is all about flexibility and grace to teachers bc everyone is trying the best they can.

My kids started in August in both elem and in a preschool and there are still changes happening a month later.

Agreed with others that they probably won’t have much this year, and they also probably just don’t know.

We go back to school next week. We can’t send out a first day schedule to kids because we don’t know what our first day schedule is. It’s so anxiety inducing.

As a teacher in an area with very low numbers, I cannot explain to you what a shitshow the education system is in right now. No administrators know what they're doing bc of the changing regulations and the fear of making a disasterous choice. I have friends in good districts who dont even know what they're teaching next week (like...what grade art or whatever). Im sure it's similar in preschools. I would just wait and see unfortunately. Frustrating but that's our world right now 😩

I know our daycare has basically canceled all events for the year. It could be that they have ideas of what they want to happen, but don’t want to commit to anything because of the unknown.

I know my daughters kindergarten class just sent home our volunteer papers with a note that even though we were signing up, we likely wouldn’t be able to actually volunteer. It’s the opposite response you’re getting and I’d almost prefer yours.

Our daycare and school give like 1-2 weeks notice for things in normal times which I find annoying and not enough time, but I agree to let this go. Considering neither our school or daycare allows any parents to go in to drop kids off right now, I would think priority to special events right now is extremely low. For something like grandparents day, I wouldn’t even think of sending my kids grandparents into a daycare even if it was allowed. If they knew, they would tell you and perhaps they don’t have an answer for you and don’t feel like telling you that since you have asked multiple times and they have other things to worry about.

Yes, I think you are being a little overboard especially given the pandemic. In our preschool experience, they plan things out about a season at a time and we definitely don’t get the info much prior to that season. Lastly, if she had a calendar to give you, she would have sent it to you by now. There’s plenty of good reasons why she wouldn’t have something prepared so I think you need to be more patient/flexible despite the constraints of your job.

Honestly, I would be shocked if the school had any normal events this year b/c of the pandemic regardless of how low the numbers are. I really can't imagine having a grandparents day. I get you're excited but I would sort of cool it for now. I'm guessing they're not holding back a calendar for any other reason than the unpredictability of the year and if/when they have one, they'll send it out.

My 3yo DD starts preschool on Tuesday. I'm so, so excited for her, she's going to love it. I'm also pretty excited about the preschool itself. It's newish (opened in March right before the pandemic shut everything down), but the teacher has been doing preschool for decades.

Here's my problem: I asked in late July if they have a school calendar, or even a September calendar, for any events they might be having. The teacher said they were still working on it. I need it so I can request any special days off from work, or communicate it in the case of things like Grandparents day (which she specifically said they were doing in September). I asked again last week (twice via email; the second was a followup to the first after no response) and while I got a response that addressed my other questions, the calendar question was still not answered. I emailed again yesterday (a week after the last email exchange), no response yet. Most of the email was a thank you for hosting a kid-friendly open house that my DD loved, with the calendar question thrown in at the end (yes, I totally forgot to ask when I was there in person).

My work is being so intense about PTO right now, but I also know I can be really, really type A about this kind of thing. Am I being an obnoxious parent if I ask again, either via text or email? I feel like a calendar isn't something ridiculous to expect, but I also don't want to be labeled "that parent" before school even starts (tbf though I might already be).

ETA: Each email ends specifically stating that if there will be no events due to the pandemic, that's totally fine. We're in a state with very low numbers (for now), and when we spoke in July I was clear that I was just looking for a general guideline, I know the pandemic is crazy and unpredictable. I just want to be able to have placeholder requests in at work (they don't mind me giving back days off, but they don't take kindly to short notice requests).
