@rahlyrah: congratulations on finishing your student teaching! Don't worry about the principal. Not every principal is going to love you even if you work your butt off. Focus on your pregnancy and finding a job elsewhere. Maybe the other student teacher spent a lot of time showing off to the principal or maybe the principal sees herself in the student teacher. Who knows?

Be proud of your accomplishment! Teaching is a tough profession.

Your intuition is usually correct. It's probably not even anything to do with your work ethic, your teaching skills, whatever. She probably just doesn't like you for some really stupid reason, and isn't mature enough or professional enough to treat you politely despite it. I think, if I were you, I'd set my sights on another school - one where you might be more fairly treated.

So sorry this ruined your last day! How sad.

Thanks ladies! I know it sounds pathetic and whiny, I'd just like some recognition for my hard work, too.

@lilteacherbee: The thing that I don't understand is that my student teaching went wonderfully. I'm in a low income, urban, middle school with a high turnover rate (13 teachers quit mid-year because they couldn't handle it). I formed wonderful relationships with my students and staff. I received "distinguished" on all of my reviews and observations from my supervising teacher and university supervisor. I requested a VP to observe one of my lessons and got a "successful" and great feedback. I have went above and beyond my student teaching responsibilities. I worked hard and am good at what I do.

That is what is dumbfounding me! I guess I should be thankful that I received such wonderful feedback from my students, supervising teacher, and team. However, the principal does the hiring and it really bothers me that she seems put off by me for some reason.

Ugh. Pregnancy hormones.

Your intuition is probably right, unfortunately. Sounds like the other student teacher promoted herself and her intentions more than you.

I have a coworker like that. Everything he did he made a big deal out of it, therefore he received many pats on the back. For instance when I passed a state exam I simply shot my manager an email saying I passed and asked if the company would pick up the cost of the license. When my coworker passed a year later (and after using my study materials) he was recognized on the conference call. We just handled it totally differently. I used to get upset, but then I simply started to brag on myself and ask for what I wanted.

As a fellow teacher, I want to say congratulations!! I know how hard student teaching is and it's a great feeling to know you actually helped those students.

I student taught 3 years ago and it was awful. I was shy and nervous. I have a late birthday AND I graduated in 3 years instead of 4, so I was student teaching at 20 years old. I wasn't emotionally ready. If I could go back now, I'd change a lot of the things I did and how I reacted to things. I say all this because even though it didn't go so well and I didn't end up teaching at that school afterwards, it opened up doors for other opportunities. I know it sucks to feel like you did something wrong even when you tried your hardest and felt like you did a great job (and I'm sure you did!). Just know that there may be another amazing opportunity elsewhere and this isn't the end! Congrats again :)

@rahlyrah: aww, don't cry. I wish I could give you a big hug. I'm sorry you've had to go through this... you haven't done anything wrong and your principal just seems to have acted really strangely. It sounds as if through no fault of yours at all, she favours the other teacher... I wonder if she's trying to discriminate against you because your pregnant? It's horrible, I know, but it was the first thing that came to mind. Please try not to let this spoil what really is a great accomplishment. You should be proud of yourself, for graduating, for helping those kids and for the way you have dealt with the situation. I hope something better for you is waiting around the corner :)

Aw man... sorry she does not seem to be giving you the recognition you deserve. She could just have a personal bias or something.

Congrats on a job well done! :)

Today, was my last day of student teaching. Finally, at 29, I am a college graduate!

Anyway, it was an incredibly emotional day. My kids and fellow team teachers made my day so special and I have never felt so loved. It was incredible.

However, at the end of the day, the principal saw that I gave all my classes lollipops as goodbye tokens and flipped out. She was really pissed. I felt awful. I'd love to get a job there and I feel like I ruined my chances.

So, at the end of the day, I called one of the other student teachers to talk to her about it. She went on to tell me that not only did the principal come in to personally say goodbye to her, gave her a hug, and told her to make sure she calls every couple weeks until a spot opens up. Also, she gave the kids candy IN FRONT of the principal and she didn't care! WTF?!

On top of all of that, the principal asked her if she could sit in on her county interview. She has made it a point to stop in for lesson observations (without the intern's request), and has made it very clear that she will have a job there.

I am incredibly happy for her. She is an amazing teacher, a sweet person, and a hard worker. She deserves it. I am so sad and jealous though!

I work my ass off. My team loves me and has advocated for me extensively. My kids love me and I have proof of how I worked extra with several of them to bring their grades up from previous quarters. I am a damn good teacher.

I recently had to speak with the principal because I set up the 8th grade service learning project and needed approval for something. At the meeting she asked me why I never bothered to advocate for myself or requested an interview. It was kind of snarky. I explained that I was under the impression that it was frowned upon to ask specific principals for interviews because we were supposed to go through the county, but that I would love the opportunity to interview with her. I even followed up with an email and a thoughtful thank you card. She never bothered to respond to either.

So now I am sitting here crying to myself. I worked so hard and it sucks to receive no recognition from her. I don't understand what the other intern did that I didn't.

Am I reading too much into this? Am I being overly sensitive due to pregnancy hormones and an overwhelming day? Or am I right in thinking that this is a very bad sign?
