@snowjewelz: Haha I know! The graphics feel so old school, it surprised me at first with its popularity! We just let them play in creative mode, so they just create or break whatever they want.

@looch: No, we have the iPad app, which costs $6.99. Yea I didn't get it at first either lol.

@Mrs. High Heels: which version are they playing, is it one of the free ones?

I honestly can't figure it out, lol.

@josina: Yeah, that's a lot of the ipad games I have... only 1-2 things unlocked and then entice you every time you open the app to buy the whole thing :meh:

A little off-topic, but for a non-wifi option... my kids have been loving Minecraft! You don't need wi-fi to play it. It kept them occupied for a whole 5 hour plane ride recently. I love the game too because I think it's creative with all the building they do. I think of it like virtual legos.

@snowjewelz: According to Amazon they are 100% free and will never charge for in-app levels, items, characters, etc.
I actually just downloaded a bunch yesterday so I'd have to check, I know some of the games we have are super annoying in that only 1 or 2 levels are available, but those were not the 'actually free' games.

We are an Apple family, but we got our son a Fire with the Freetime for his birthday. You only need wifi to download the games. The price is really a good deal. I know the Toca and Sago Mini apps are like $2-3 each on the iPad, but they are included with FreeTime! There are several Disney Jr. appisodes and we've never been asked to pay for the activities (I think you need to pay for some or the app on the iPad?) The cost savings alone are worth it in my opinion.

I also like that we don't have to worry about locking him into an app because he has his own account that has the parent controls on. I dislike the iPad for games/apps because you either have to lock them into a single app or let them do whatever they want (including deleting things).

It is less intuitive for me, but my son has never complained about it and has no issues finding games/apps and playing with it. I can do the basic parental controls, so it works great for us!

@josina: So when it's free, you don't have to pay more to unlock other level/features?

@kiddosc: Ahh gotcha. Haha, we are all Apple, and all apps on the ipads are pretty much for DD, but she has deleted apps, moved them around, etc so it'd be nice if she just has her own dedicated thing but I am not about to get ANOTHER ipad!

@snowjewelz: You still need wifi to download the apps and videos, but once they're there you don't need wifi to use/watch them.

We're an android family, so we love freetime and the fire tablet for our son. He loves being able to pick out whatever games he wants to play and we don't have to monitor every little thing. He also never complains when he meets the limits we set up on the tablet because it just shuts off and he accepts it as a fact. It syncs with all of our accounts and devices and we're used to the interface.

I've heard that most apple people don't like it because it's so different. On the flip side, I just had to get an iphone for work and I hate it, lol. :silly:

We don't have Amazon freetime, but E uses my Kindle Fire and I just downloaded a bunch of Amazon's 'actually free' games for him to play. Then I keep the wi-fi off / parental lock on so he can't accidentally download anything.
ETA: I would prefer less screen time, but it's been a lifesaver when trying to cook/clean and take care of a newborn.

My kids each got a fire tablet from my mom for Christmas. I'm not a big fan of electronic devices, but it came with a free year of FreeTime. It has been really nice lately because I am 6 months pregnant so I give each of them 1 hour of FreeTime as their quiet time in the afternoons. They are totally self-sufficient and I know there is nothing on there that can get into that I wouldn't be okay with. I haven't used it without the wifi because I don't have time to download stuff.

We don't have Amazon FreeTime, but you can still set up accounts and personalize your kids' content on the Amazon Fire without paying for it. The paid service just gives you access to a bunch of other stuff, but you can still access all the normal Amazon Prime stuff and use the parental controls without it.

We had it, but wifi was still necessary. Or we had to download all of the shows in advance of not having wifi. Generally, we found we didn't like our fire table or freetime very much.

Anyone has this subscription with the Fire tablet? Just saw Mrs Bee's post about this; I never knew about this!

We area total Apple family, but I am so tempted to do this later on when we go on longer trips. No need to worry about wifi or he messing up something on my Ipad; everything is "approved", parental controls, and content goes up to age 12. I can see each of my girls having their own instead of each having an iPad and the fee is so cheap!
