@kjpugs: Oy yea I'm used to my Hygeia's crazy power. :silly: So the local provider works with Cigna's plans but Cigna just doesn't give it out unless necessary? That's so horrible. I am in New York so I don't think your local provider would work for me. With DD I was able to breastfeed and only pumped while I was at work plus one session at night before bed (for freezer stash). If the APY is not as strong, maybe I should use that for my single nighttime session and bring my beast to work since that's when I need it to perform the most?

@Radish: Great to hear it worked well for you for a year! I'm still hopeful for this pump.

@merriment: Yes yes closed is good - I saw some horrifying pictures of the insides of some open systems.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: I WOHM so I really need the pump to perform. The positive is I have my Hygeia already so I can always just lug that around like I did last time with DD. Speaking of, I should test it out and make sure it still works fine!

I should add that BF didn't work for LO so I was EP- I think that can be a big part of it, if you are EP or using a pump while at work.

As an SAHM with a supply problem my APY was sufficient. But if I were an WOHM I'd definitely get a Medela.

I really liked my Ameda. The fact that it was a closed system was super important to me, particularly as I know of a few people who have had funky things grow in the tubes of the Medela (an open system).

@littleveesmommy: yeah, it's not going to compare to your Hygeia!

I wish I remembered how I got in touch with the local provider. They were awesome. And if I had been put in touch with them first, I would have gotten my pick. I had the EXACT same issues- including using Sterling- and Cigna giving me wrong information. Where are you located?

@danda: That's awesome output! And I do like that it is a closed system as well. =)

@Alivoo01: It's good to know they have quick and responsive customer service! Hopefully the motor doesn't go out but then again, you never know.

@lawbee11: Thanks! I'm saving these links for future reference.

@kjpugs: *hugs* I am so so sorry you had such a terrible experience. I, for one, am not a huge fan of Cigna anyway and find their reps give conflicting info, but that's a whole other story. I was on the phone with the rep today and he insisted this is the only route to go - CareCentrix and Ameda. When I asked CareCentrix if that is the only pump they would provide, they said that is the only pump that Sterling Medical (their supplier) had been sending out since early last year. I guess I just have to see how it goes once I start using it. Hopefully the fact that I used my Hygeia with my first (which I LOVE!) doesn't make the Ameda seem weak in comparison. My Hygeia is a beast!

@kjpugs: wow! I'm sorry you had such a miserable experience with it. Mine was the exact opposite. I'm sorry you had such an unfortunate experience with the Ameda. The PY was actually one of the ones reco by the LC at my delivering hospital. But then I hate her. :P

I have the exact same insurance, exact same situation, and I aabsolutely HATED it. I won't go into the whole shebang - I literally fought tooth and nail with Cigna and CareCentrix up really high because having no choice like that is unacceptable, and it's considered (per my outside the hive research- mostly LC's I've worked with) to be a very poor quality pump. However, it may work for you. I had very low supply though and ultimately I say it was one of the nails in my pumping/BF coffin. I eventually got them to approve a hospital grade and worked with a supplier who was local - the CareCentrix person felt bad for me and gave me their info but said that "she never told me if anyone asks." Every person at Cigna and CareCentrix I talked to comisserated that they knew it was a miserable pump. Even just the quality of the parts- ugh. The flanges were so poorly made that I had to use a nail file along the edges because they weren't smooth, seems like they were messy in the process of making them. I can't express my disappointment enough and I recommend pushing the envelope a bit to have more choice, if possible.

That being said, I've seen here on HB lots of people who love it. I think you won't know til you try. Hopefully it works better for you than it did for me :(

@Mrs. Blue: @littleveesmommy: My Ameda motor went out also. It started acting funny before then, then one day, it decided to just stop working. I called Ameda and they overnighted a new motor to me.

@littleveesmommy: I think it's totally fine as a second pump and I actually like using it around the house because it is smaller and lighter than the Medela I have. I still pump every night before bed with it.

What I did was use both when I was at home on maternity leave and then took the Medela to work because I respond better to it. The flanges are different but the bottles themselves are interchangable, so I've found it's pretty easy to switch between them.

I have an Ameda Purely Yours and it works well for me. - I pump about 14-18 ounces at work every day and DD drinks 12 ounces at daycare. I love that it is a closed system so there is no need to worry about cleaning the tubing or possibility of mold growing inside the pump itself and getting into the milk.

@edelweiss: I was wondering on the accessories/flanges too so this is good to know! I wonder if I can macguyver my Hygeia parts to work with it so I don't have to work with two different types of parts.

@jetsa: Aww bummer. I do hear a lot of people love their PISA!

@lawbee11: Are these adaptors by Ameda? I would love both - for bags and for Tommee Tippee bottles since those were the bottles I loved with DD too. This is so awesome!

@Revel: The Ameda would be my second pump so this is making me wonder if it should be my work pump or home pump. Unfortunately it's the only one my insurance covers - hopefully I have some luck with it. =\

I have an Ameda PY and a very old Medela PIS. My Ameda is definitely underpowered compared to the Medela. I do like how small and portable the Ameda is, and it does work, just not as well in my opinion. I use the Medela at work and the Ameda at home.

If I was only going to have one pump I would try to get something other than the Ameda.

Yes, love mine! I got it free through insurance, too, so I can't compare it to other pumps. I use it daily and it works great. I've built up quite the freezer stash with it! I normally pump into the Ameda storage bags (there are adapters you can get that allow you to connect the Ameda bags to the pump so you don't have to hold them). I also have the adapters that allow me to pump into Tommee Tippee bottles.

I had an experience similar to Mrs. Blue except my pump didn't die. I was gifted one medela pisa so the ameda was just a back up, I disliked it so much though I bought another PISA. As it was free, it was great to try out but I personally did not like it. I know @kjpugs also had similar issues with her ameda.

i used a rented medela symphony after i first gave birth, then started using ameda purely yours for the long run. overall i really like the ameda PY, especially since it's a closed system so conceivably i could pass in on to someone else down the road--however i don't use the ameda pumping accessories. i already had the medela parts, and i macgyvered them so i could use them with the PY. i was used to the medela parts and felt they were easier for me to use--i had a hard time getting the PY flanges in and out of my pumping bra, and i felt like there were more parts to clean.

but anyway, since it's free and a really good machine, i give a big thumbs-up!

@littleveesmommy: Our insurance paid for an Ameda Purely Yours double pump. Unfortunately, I didn't have good luck with mine. I used it when I was home while the boys were in the NICU, and it didn't have nearly the strength as the Medela at the hospital (granted it was a hospital grade one). When we brought the boys home, the Ameda stopped working a few days later, so maybe I just had a dud. I ended up just buying a Medela Pump-in-Style, which does have more parts to clean, but worked great. My own thoughts were if the insurance company is going to pay for it, it doesn't hurt me one bit to try it out. If it doesn't work, you can just buy what you would have gotten otherwise.

@littleveesmommy: I've attached my Medela bottles to it, and it fits fine. Just don't twist too hard bc it can "jump the threading" and you have to rescrew them on. DS takes the Medela bottles so I haven't had to buy additional bottles. However, I'm assuming it'll attach to any narrow neck bottle.

@Alivoo01: Thanks so much - this is very helpful! I have the Hygeia Enjoye from my first and liked that it has separate controls for speed and suction, so I am very happy to hear that the Ameda has the same! Did you try attaching other bottles to the Ameda? Trying to see if I can pump directly into another bottle to skip a step in feeding.

I have the Ameda and like it. I also have the Freestyle and I like the portability of the Freestyle. The motor is small and compact so it's great for traveling. I like the Ameda bc it's less parts to clean, but make sure you buy a small bottle/nipple brush to clean your Ameda parts because the tubing is all one piece and regular bottle brushes can't reach down in there well. The Ameda also has separate controls for speed and suction so you have complete control on that, which is nice.

I just called my insurance company and they cover double electric breast pumps at 100% (woohoo) when ordered through their medical supplier. We have Cigna Open Access Plan and their supplier is CareCentrix. The customer service rep at CareCentrix told me that they are currently (and have been since April 2013) sending out Ameda Purely Yours pumps. I have no experience and have not read anything about this pump yet - if you have one (or considered it), what are your thoughts? If you have any point of comparison to other pumps, that would be awesome too!

Thanks!!!
