Have you thought about an AG gift card? There are awesome packages on their site. Maybe it is only for flagship stores though.

I'm in the just buy it camp. But that's mostly because I don't feel really attached to being the one who buys things for my child. I think it's great that you want to do something so nice for her.

what a special gift! My first was Adeline. We just got my step-daughter her first one for Christmas and she loves it! (the mom knew and told us which doll she preferred)

@snowjewelz: @ktdid23: lol, I received the go ahead from the mom- very brief reply and no direction with regard to doll.

@ktdid23: my first was Samantha, but I drooled over Kirsten's birthday party.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Ohh... I thought bc it's a god child at least he must be super close to them but I get that men don't like so ask questions lol. Honestly tho the gift rivalry shouldn't apply to god parents!

@snowjewelz: I'm not close to them. It's my husband's friend and for whatever reason he doesn't like to ask his friend stuff about his daughter/ family. Yet, he is very happy I like buying the presents for his God kids. I am FB friends with the wife/ the bday girl's mom, but we are cordial not friends.

@mrs.lemon-lime: Kirsten was my first AG doll and I always thought it was so cool that she had her own stories and play sets that matched the stories. That was back when AG was actually called the Pleasant Company! I really love this year's Girl of the Year. She has pink hair and is a ballerina. Love it! Can't wait for my daughter to be old enough for a big AG doll!

@mrsh: thanks :-)

@ktdid23: running it past her parents just for doll preference is a great idea. Mr. Lime thinks it's cool we can get her a doll that has her features, but I don't think he really looked at the link i sent him. The doll doesn't look like her. Lol

I would ask her parents. That said, my daughter's Godmother (my sister) gave my daughter a Bitty Baby and it was so special :-) My sister gets my daughter AG Bitty Baby outfits and other play items for holidays and I love that she has that bond with my daughter.

You might also find that the birthday girl has a favorite historical AG and would like that instead of a doll in her own likeness. For that amount of money, I would check just to make sure!

I would run it past parents!

My MIL came at Thanksgiving with the catalogue for the Canadian version (called Maplelea Dolls) and I told her that I wanted to get them for my gals for Christmas. Things changed, and I decided that I would wait a year or so. Said nothing to anyone...AND MY MIL STILL GOT THEM FOR THE GIRLS. THAT HAPPENED. I am still miffed about it.

The parents might love the idea, though--but I say play it safe just in case!

Mr. Lime's oldest God child is turning 7 and she just became a big sister. We are planning to get her an American Girl Doll. Mr. Lime suspects with a new baby in the house his friends wouldn't splurge on a pricey doll plus he swears AG dolls are not a thing.

So many of you write about how you feel robbed when someone else gives your kids certain items, and I know for me getting my first AG doll was a big deal. Do you think we should just gift the doll (one in her likeness) and an extra outfit? Or run it past her parents?
