i had Felicity and loved her because her hair was similar in color to mine! BUT - I read all the books and I think the Molly books were my favorite! I also wanted the one that you make to look like you but never got it!

I was never really into dolls, so DD would have to ask for it specifically before we'd get her something like that.

We went to the AG store in NYC last year with DD, though, and I was amazed at huge it is! I never knew AG was that big, but the store was like 3 stories! Wow!

I had Samantha growing up; I loved that doll so much. I dreamed of having an entire room dedicated to American Girl (Pleasant Company back then) dolls with all of their furniture and accessories.

I even worked at American Girl Place at The Grove in LA for a year or so and I loved it. If we find out we're having a girl, I'm pretty sure one of my first girly purchases will be a Bitty Baby :)

I still have my Samantha in her trunk and she's in excellent condition. Hopefully I can pass that down as well.

@tororojo: the food was wicked good! I was surprised. expensive, but not *sickeningly* so...fun for a treat, for sure. I also was wistful looking at the doll salon and all that...so expensive (more money to do the doll's hair than mine, lol!) but so, so cool. I can't imagine being little again and just how..magical!...it all must seem to them!!

oh my goodness, I hate to say this because it makes me sound so spoiled, but I had 3 of them! Felicity, Kirsten, and Addy. I think my mom liked them as much as I did, hence the 3 (I would have been happy with one).

I used Felicity (the first one I got) as a way for 3rd grade me to test if Santa was real. I told ONLY the mall Santa that I wanted a Felicity doll, and then when I got it I was so sure there was a Santa. In reality, my mom had a private word with "santa" while I was feeding the reindeer. LOL

I have a Samantha from when I was a kid. She was the only one I ever wanted so I ended up with pretty much all of her furniture and accessories over the years. I kept pretty good care of everything so I'm excited to pass it all down if we have a girl. One of my good friends had every doll from the original group - maybe 5 or 6? I heard the quality of the original dolls is better that the new ones (since the company was bought) so hopefully all our old dolls will hold up for our LOs!

@Clementine: That makes me sad, poor little girl!

other thoughts:
1) Etta is such a cute girl's name!
2) It doesn't shock me that they don't do hair for other brands of dolls, but it sucks that that little girl was treated like crap! Definitely could have been handled better.

@sorrycharlie: It has been a few years since we ate at the AG store, but I remember thinking the food was pretty good! And also, way more than a kid (or adult) really needs. It's fun having an excuse to do silly little girl things. :)

I loved the books when I was younger but never had a doll. My sister got one of the dolls that is designed to look like here; there are so many more options now!

@highwire: I have been to the American Girl store with my little cousin, it's pretty cool! We had lunch and shopped around, she has several of the dolls. It's kind of insane, there's a doll hair salon, a ridiculous amount of merchandise and in the restaurant they have little chairs that clip onto the table so you can eat with your dolls!

I read every book, studied the catalog and begged my parents for a doll, but I never got one. I remember my cousin getting the Samantha doll for Christmas the same year I wanted it and I was devastated and I could see it hurt my mom too to see me trying to be happy with my presents but secretly wanting to steal my cousin's doll! I never did get one, so if my DD loves the books and wants one I will splurge and get her one!

Haaahah, I had Kirsten and Molly. Kirsten ended up with an unfortunate hairstyle and after that, they kind of lost their appeal.

My sister had one of 'em, too, the kind you could "order to look like you?" Hers ended up with a missing arm and leg, both eyes popped back into her head, missing fingers due to "cutting her nails", Sharpie makeup, and a hair cut. The best part was, she was invited by a friend to go to the American Girl Cafe thing in Chicago. Haaahahaha. Fail.

I love the American Girl dolls and all the books! Between me and my three sisters, we had all of them at one point! (Although they have come out with more since...) Since mine are currently in a box in my parent's basement, and I recently found out we are having a little girl, I was just talking to my sister and Dad about breaking them out for LO. At what age would you give them to your LO? I didn't really play with them either - just kind of staged them - so I wouldn't want to give them to her too young.
