I live just outside of Detroit and while I will defend the city and continue to support it, I am not even remotely surprised it made most miserable city in the US. The flip side though it the city has a lot of spunk, things happen here that you don't see in other cities (good things!) and the grass roots efforts to revitalize the city actually make a noticeable difference. It's expensive here, can be crowded, super busy. The weather can be extreme with super cold winters and steamy hot summers. These things don't necessarily bother me, but I know that it could bother some people. Also it's one of the few cities that does require a city income tax. The flip side of that is that the property taxes aren't so high.
