I spent a summer in Poughkeepsie one summer. It was indeed miserable.

Aw : ( My little state is on there 3 times (Ohio)! It is sort of a sad state, but there are really fun parts of it too (Columbus for example). I'll just stick up for it a little bit and say that the people are what make it great ;)

Poor Michigan indeed! I live just outside of Detroit and while I will defend the city and continue to support it, I am not even remotely surprised it made most miserable city in the US. The flip side though it the city has a lot of spunk, things happen here that you don't see in other cities (good things!) and the grass roots efforts to revitalize the city actually make a noticeable difference. The city has a lot to offer, I am amazed and saddened though at how many people refuse to set foot in it.

I'm from NJ and totally not surprised by Camden and AC. Camden is so depressing and scary I would never drive there at night time (and often during the daytime for that matter.) AC when you look some of the areas I can see it.

I can definitely understand why NYC is on there. Home prices!!! This place is not for everyone, it's a tough city... but I do love it.

Oh, and Atlantic City, every time we go there I think how horribly miserable that place is--not the casinos but the surrounding areas look down and out.

I'm sad for Detroit, it's really not all that bad. I'm a wimpy Canadian and I go over all the time, albeit in well built up neighborhoods/touristy areas. Maybe it's pity for our football team? lol!

@Smurfette: Aw, I wish I could! I grew up in ATL, and went back for grad school, but I moved to DC a few years ago. I still come back every so often since I have family and friends there... maybe I'll get lucky and my next visit will coincide w/ an ATL meetup, I'd love to see you guys!

ETA: I love all the festivals (Inman Park, Dogwood, Book, etc.) over the summer in Atlanta, we should all hit up one of those!

I can't believe Atlanta is #16. I love it here, well besides the traffic. That I could live without.

I am not surprised Ohio is there three times. I lived there for a couple years, north of Columbus and hated it. The sun doesn't come out in the winter, it was horrible.

While I LURVE my city, I can totally see why New York City is on the list. It's expensive here, can be crowded, super busy. The weather can be extreme with super cold winters and steamy hot summers. These things don't necessarily bother me, but I know that it could bother some people. Also it's one of the few cities that does require a city income tax. The flip side of that is that the property taxes aren't so high. This is definitely not a place for everyone, but it is for me. :)

@MsLipGloss: I always wonder how they define Atlanta, since there's so much sprawl. Like, if I survey someone from Roswell, who commutes 90 minutes to Peachtree Center, then yeah, that's no fun. But I feel like most people with a mailing address of Atlanta actually don't have it THAT bad, commute-wise.

I grew up in Atlanta and went back for grad school. I LOVE Atlanta and would move back there in a minute if it weren't for DH's job!
