@Trailmix: I don't know if I already thanked you for posting this, but THANK YOU. Made my day. I'm sitting here FREAKING out, awaiting my AMH results that will be in tomorrow. I can relax a little, knowing that even with low numbers, it's possible.

@CatchAFallingStar: My Fsh was borderline high at 9. They were really worried about my ovarian resever because Ive had prior surgires on my ovaries and my number came back great -over 5.. I dreaded that test too but felt better after having the knowlege. Hoping I have a success story after my IVF.

@Avabear: This is so good to know. I'm still debating having this test. I think the results would just scare me if they're low. If there's a chance of conceiving even with low AMH, I'd rather just keep trying. Otherwise, I can see myself falling into a depression and giving up.

@LittleLashesToes: I don't think it's as dire as you're imagining...your FSH is in the normal range and really, in a DOR group I'm part of FSH is considered more important than AMH. I've heard of many women with undetectable (as in under 0.16-0.25) AMH having babies, whereas your FSH would need to be much higher for it to be a significant issue. Don't lose hope!

@kentuckygirl: The good news is that regardless of the number, you were successful with one round of IVF. That's a really really good outcome with low AMH. If you decide to do IVF with #2 you could look into doing something like an estrogen priming protocol. You had the issues with the cysts, right? It took me a long time to figure out I had cysts/early follicles because of the DOR, and estrogen priming finally took care of that. I just wish my first RE had tried it and not maxed me out on stims with IVF.

AMH is a much better indicator because unlike FSH it doesn't fluctuate as often. Your FSH is only as good as your highest reading but you would have to be tested multiple times in order to get an accurate picture. My FSH was 7 but my amh was a bit in the low side. For what its worth I conceived my son by surprise on our honeymoon not trying but not preventing one day in my window. We are about to TTC for number two and I am a bit nervous. Good luck!!!

@spaniellove: I found out the day I went for my first RE visit to confirm pregnancy so honestly at that point the exact number didn't stick with me. But the Dr. mentioned surprise that we were successful with that number and that if we had the results sooner, he might have followed a protocol with lower dose meds. I need to follow up with their office about a billing item, so I will ask them to send me a copy of the results.

Interesting point about treatment possibly increasing FSH. This was at my first RE office and I was trying to get some meds paid by insurance and the billing lady callus-ly said "well your FSH went up, so that should help (get the meds approved)" Uh, super bad overall lady, not good!

I am worried about our odds with TTC for number 2, though.

My first RE didn't test AMH but during my year of treatment with them my FSH did increase and I wish I had known what my AMH was. When I went to a new RE we went straight into an IVF cycle and they also tested my AMH at the same time. Fortunately I did get pregnant but they only retrieved 3 eggs. After egg retrieval is when we got the AMH results and realized I had very low AMH indicating low ovarian reserve. Honestly, I would have gone to IVF sooner if I had known my AMH.

@LittleLashesToes: Just a little story of hope for you: I did the AMH test and tested low (1.8) for my age (I was 36.5 at test time). I also have a blocked fallopian (HSG test). We had additional testing with my DH. Found out DH has low testosterone, he went on Clomid. He also has variscocle. Waited to start the IVF process (DH insurance covered 80% for 6 cycles, his open enrollment for me to join was in April) Was to start IVF process in May...... We ended up getting pregnant on our own. I'm 38, and am 33 wks along.

I'm glad we have all this information in our back pocket. The journey TTC is a hard emotional road, but it is all worth it. Good luck on your journey!

@LittleLashesToes: The first RE (who didn't understand the condition and treated it wrong) did an IUI with injectibles and IVF. The next one did a few IUIs and then realized I always had a follicle starting to grow at the wrong time, in the previous cycle, because my FSH was off. And that was why IVF never worked. So I took estrogen at the end of each cycle to suppress my follicles until I needed them to grow.

@LittleLashesToes: My RE automatically tested AMH and FSH together as part of the initial bloodwork as well. My FSH was borderline high (9.6) and my AMH was extremely low (.25). Sometimes the two numbers correspond the way you'd expect, and sometimes they don't. You could ask to have your AMH tested just to get the whole picture and if you need it, to help you find the right treatment. For me, knowing that I had low ovarian reserve and having an RE who was experienced at treating it made all the difference in the world. Good luck!

Hi,

Not sure if this will help, I was told my AMH was very low for my age (30) it was 6.4 - should be well over 14 (different scale in Australia) I am currently pregnant, 2nd month trying, so the low AMH was not relevant for me, it is a relatively new test which indicates how your ovaries will respond to IVF drugs, it does not mean you don't ovulate, and that you wont fall pregnant naturally.

Good luck, stay positive.

@LittleLashesToes: I had my AMH tested as part of the initial lab work with the RE and honestly I just wanted to have all the info I could get. AMH is thought to be a better indication of ovarian reserve and there has been a correlation showed between low AMH and poor response to stimulation (i.e. for IUI or IVF)

I had them both done concurrently (they were both part of the panel of bloodwork my RE ordered). In my case, my FSH was extremely elevated (20.3) and my AMH was low (.3), so the two together indicated diminished ovarian reserve. I would think that since your FSH was normal, your AMH would be too? Not sure about that. The reason to get it done would be if you've been TTC unsuccessfully for a while, knowing a possible issue makes it easier to figure out a treatment plan. In my case, it pushed us straight to injections plus an IUI, which worked and my 6-month old twins are sleeping as I type!

I had my FSH checked on Day 3 last cycle. It was normal at 8.58. However, I've recently found out that the AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) test might be more accurate in indicating my egg reserve. I was EXTREMELY worried while waiting for the FSH results and don't know if I can handle going through that again.

Have any of you had both the FSH and AMH tests? Do you recommend I'm tested for AMH right away or wait to see if my doctor recommends it?

I'm 35, so all of this just scares me. We have no children and I so badly want a baby!
