My 13 year old has an allergic reaction when he was 6, after many many rounds too. It was scary, and we've avoided it altogether.

This is what happened twice. Two different antibiotics but safe kind of rash both times. Poor guy.

I got hives using penicillin as a child and have avoided it since. There have always been alternatives. I also had a reaction to Ceclor(cefaclor), so keep that in mind if they try to give you something else.

I don't remember my reaction but I've always avoided amoxicillin to this day. Not chancing another reaction! There's always plenty of alternatives available.

I had it as a child and I remember I was taken to the hospital. I had a bad rash (I remember I could see it on my own skin when I looked down), but I can't remember if I had any other symptoms.

I think I grew out of it though. I avoided amoxicillin all of my childhood. But when I was an adult, I'm pretty sure I was prescribed it, took it and had no negative effects.

Bumping this old thread because we're dealing with this today! Lo was on day 8 of amoxicillin for an ear infection (her first)and woke up with a crazy rash today (also her first). Scary day, though she was acting totally fine and happy the whole time! Rashes freak me out though, seriously creepy to me. I'm glad to know it'll clear up soon! Dr gave us prednisolone and said to take Benadryl too, and I gave lo an oatmeal bath before bed. :(

Any other experiences?

@Corduroy: I am allergic to penicillin and ammoxicillan. So is everyone in my family. Literally.

My sister, brother and I get hives. My mom & I have throat swelling.

I've had to go to the ER for it! I was young so I don't remember what exactly happened or how long it took to improve. My sister & brother gets hives for a day or two, though.

It's scary! I'm afraid for if/when Chloe would ever need it. I hope your LO is ok ASAP!

My LO reacted to Augmentin on day 7. It looked wicked, but it cleared within 2 days after stopping the medication. What took longer to clear was the slight shadowy/purple-y look that was left on her skin where the rash had been. I didn't notice it (the shadowy patches) about 6 days or so after the rash disappeared.

Same here, he was 5ish and had been on amox multiple times in his life. I want to say it cleared in less than a week with doses of benadryl. Hope she feels better soon .

we just went through that last week.
I even posted an "identify this rash" thread.
The urgent care doc prescribed a baby dose of benedryl and steriod. The rash cleared up very quickly and was completely gone in 3 days.

LO got a rash Thursday night, day 9/10 of her course of amoxicillin. I took her to the doctor Friday and it was confirmed she had the classic symptoms and that this is different than the non-allergic rash she got last time she took amoxicillin. The doctor said it could take three weeks to go away.

I feel very fortunate that it isn't a more serious anaphactic reaction but LO looks like hell. My in laws flew in last night from out of state for LO's birthday next week. I am so sad they don't get to spend time with their beautiful granddaughter. They're getting red, spotted, swollen, fussy baby.

The reaction is still getting worse. I'd love to hear from anyone else how long it took from when their LO reacted until they started getting better.
