my son had an amoxicillin rash, but like others have said, it happens at least a week after the first dose. it sucks! poor guy was so itchy. and like others have said, the amoxicillin rash isn't an allergy, just a reaction. if your LO had a true allergy it'd be more like food allergies where its hard for them to breathe.

but glad your LO got checked out and its not related!

@Hoots: Dr said the rash wasn't related to the Amoxicillin and they checked out both babies and they don't look bad enough to continue the medicine. That's good.

@bluestriped bee: Yeah the ped. apologized profusely to me when I brought her in. Apparently it's common enough on babies that she typically warns parents when she writes the Rx, but forgot to with me. The rash scared the crap out of me, but didn't bother DD all that much at all.

@Hoots: Ah, thanks. My sister mentioned amoxicilin rash but I didn't have the time yet to ask her if this is an allergic rash or something that is common. Good to know. Thanks!

If it's just Amoxicillin rash, then shouldn't be classified as an allergic reaction. It's a side effect and doesn't indicate an allergy to penicillin. We just went through this. Ped and multiple pharmacists agreed. It still should be evaluated by ped.

Eta: DD's happened about a week after her first dose. It was about an hour after her morning dose. Rash spread quickly and looked like tiny red bumps. It subsided for a bit and then settled into a patchy looking rash. It lasted a few days. Ped said that was classic presentation, so not sure if the same holds up if the rash shows up after a first dose.

Lo had an allergic reaction to amoxicillin but it didn't show up for about a week, which the dr said was standard presentation for a penicillin allergy.

My son has gotten a rash after being on amoxicillin even though he had been on it several times previously. Our ped thought it was virus related because it was only the rash and didn't have any other symptoms. Definitely worth getting checked out though. These things are so hard to figure out sometimes.

Oh my! I have no idea.....I just know that my MIL has a severe allergy to Penicillin, and can't have anything with it. I also know that since my MIL has a severe allergy to it, my DH has never been given in either just in case.

DD had a little bit of a red/pink rash with little bumps about an hour after giving her Amoxicilllin for the first time.

I called the pediatrician after hours line. By the time they called back about 2 hours after the medicine was given, the rash was going away.

The pediatrician want to follow up and see her today. I wonder if it's an allergy and they'll give her another antibiotic for her conjunctivitis and ear infection.

Oh, DH is allergic to Augmentin.
