Seems like we had 4 days of terrifying hives that moved all over and it’s been much milder since then. Still doing Zyrtec at the nurse’s advice but we made it to school picture day ok!

@Chuckles: you can react anytime as your exposure increases, but you’re most likely to react within an hour of the last dose if it’s hives/allergic. There’s also an amoxicillin rash which is not hives/allergy, so you can see which you’re experiencing as they have varying times to resolve I think.

When did your LO's reactions start? DD started amoxicillin last Thursday night and today she has a rash over her whole body. Could it be the medication if she's been on it for a week already? Building up in her system or something?

@bhbee: My 2 year old daughter just had a reaction to amoxicillin. She’s now considered allergic. She had tummy aches and hives after finishing her dosage. The bumps lasted for about 5 days! I gave bendadryl as well at bedtime/nap

@HappyBaker: oh my, I laughed at the leper costume. So sad though!!

@bhbee: Not my kid but me- I also break out in hives with penicillin, amoxicillin, and maybe more kinds of antibiotics. I’ve lost track. When I break out in hives I usually just leave them and they go away on their own in a few days. I hope she’s not too miserable and they go away soon!!!

@HappyBaker: hers changed some in look too, interesting! Had to laugh at the leper costume :silly:

Yes I’m also worried she’ll be allergic to all, I have a strong mold allergy and couldn’t take them as a kid either. But I know we’re going to have to try them to find out :bummed:

@periwinklebee: I kept her home today and think maybe it is looking less angry … hopefully by tomorrow she won’t be scaring anyone! I was definitely contemplating asking about prednisone but that’s always complicated like you said.

When this happened to DS it took over a week to fully clear up, his hives were crazy and awful looking, and turned into something else that was like lesions that looked like bullseyes. We did Benadryl and Zyrtec but were pretty close to him being given a steroid to get it under control. We kept him home for the worst few days of it and eventually sent him back with a very clear note from the pediatrician that no he was not contagious or in distress. It was around Halloween so we said he costume was a leper lol. Good luck! If she’s uncomfortable I’d definitely see if there are any other options to get them to clear faster. And if amoxicillin be careful with the other related medications, DS is allergic to ALL of them even though his doctor said that’s usually not the case.

Sorry about this - poor kiddo

My son had an allergic reaction to tamiflu, but it fortunately resolved pretty quickly. We just did benadryl, so I'm not much help. I know when he had an anaphylactic reaction, the ER gave him other stronger prescription medications that help an allergic reaction to resolve - I don't remember what these are but if she's still miserable you could ask the ped if there's something stronger than benadryl that would be appropriate. These probably work by suppressing the immune system, which you may not want unless it's really needed (could affect susceptibility to illness). I don't think they'd want my son at school with an ongoing reaction - he got sent home with some lingering hives from a cross-exposure to eggs recently - but it probably just depends on the specifics of your preschool policy and what they're comfortable with.

So sorry - allergies suck

Just curious, if your child reacted to an antibiotic with crazy hives, what was your experience with how long it took to resolve and did anything really help?

I knew she had gotten a few small hives earlier in the meds (for UTI) but didn’t think the dr would change anything based on that - well then of course she hit her threshold and the hives went insane. We stopped the med Friday but the hives are as bad or worse now. Constantly moving of course but everywhere. Dr suggested Benadryl the first day followed by Zyrtec and I do think it’s helped the itching some but wondering how long this may last? She just tested out of needing epipens for food allergies but clearly her immune system is still looking for trouble …

Also would you be totally freaked out if a kid covered in hives came to school?? (Her teacher knows.)
