@locavore_mama: You are completely right that the best milk option is raw and preferably local. However, affording that is another thing entirely! ;)

As to the original question: we won't be switching to low fat at 2. Our family health histories don't warrant it and I don't think fat, in and of itself (if it's from a good source), is bad at all. We just enjoy full fat items in moderation.

@locavore_mama: Yes, we often buy non-homogenized milk from a local dairy. (They carry it in many of the grocery stores near us.)

@skibobrown: do you have local dairy farms near you? Many local farms near me carry a low temp pasteurized non homogenized milk. It's as close to "raw" as you can get without going raw. I'm not brave enough to try raw until the kids are older. :D

We are not planning on switching. I also believe there is no such recommendation to do so here in Germany. I use non-homogenized milk for LO and it helps him better digest it than the processed milks.

We all drink 2% in our house, but wuth food we don't reach for the low fat options. Good fats keep you feeling more full and satisfied, so you don't actually feel like you have to eat as much. Low fat isn't as filling so people eat more...and usually low fat = more sugar (like fat free ranch dressing). So we stick to normal things.

We just had the discussion w/ our pedi about switching to 2%, but we're not going to do it. DD is quite slender and has plateaued in her weight gain for almost the last 8 months. Also, I just have this gut feeling that food should be eaten the way it appears in nature. I'm not quite brave enough to go for raw milk, but organic whole milk is what we've all been drinking as a family since DD turned 1 and started drinking cow's milk. (DH and I don't drink much milk, but when we do...)

Doc said to switch and I did as soon as they finished their whole milk. I mixed it as first but they drank 2% just fine. They don't drink as much, but I really think that's due to going off the bottle nipple. We do straw cups now and they started drinking less.

@lizzywiz: Sounds like you need a new pedi! :)

I have asked some DUMB questions to mine and he always answers them with grace. I'm pretty sure all parents ask "silly" questions because they are worried about their LOs and want to make sure they are doing their best for them. Your pedi should never make you feel bad about that.

@Raindrop: My LO was officially underweight until recently (chronic illness). She is now 50% for height and 15% for weight but they said she is ok . You bring up a very good point about making room for healthier calories- I didn't even think of that!
@Jenn23: @locavore_mama: your discussion brought up a very personal issue- my dad, grandma, uncle and aunt all passed in their 40s and 50s from sudden heart attacks. I had no idea that full fat at this age may be a factor in that! Looks like I have some research to do- thanks for the heads up, ladies!

Unfortunately- I hate our pediatrician. She treats me like an idiot and talks right off the pamphlets. Ugh. So she gave me the schpeel, but when I asked questions she acted like I am stupid to ask, you know?
My daughter has several specialist doctors who are great, which is why I haven't been mad enough (read: had enough energy) to go to another practice, but I think it's time.

@Jenn23: no worries! Like I mentioned in my original post we had fully intended to keep her on whole milk until her 2 year visit. We trust our pediatrician and he's most aware of her full family history so made the switch.
We have a very well balanced diet so we'll just up healthy fats in other areas. :)

@locavore_mama: When you have time, do a little research and you'll find that much recent research has shown that skim and 1% is actually more likely to cause weight gain, etc. than whole milk. It's fascinating and thought you may want to read it since you mentioned switching to skim or 1% due to health reasons.

I will keep J on whole milk for quite awhile after he turns 2. Probably switch him to 2% (my husband and I drink this ourselves for no good reason besides taste preference) at some point, but in no hurry.

Interesting question and interesting answers :)

Question - Did you talk to your doctor about your concerns?

Our LO was in the 50% for weight but everything else was 75% so I was a little worried he was underweight.

So I asked about switching from low fat from full fat. The doctor said that LO is a fine weight for his age and height ratio.

He wanted LO to go to low fat so that it would push him into eat more aka getting his calories from food and not just from milk and promoting a more balance diet.

Just letting you know what the doctor told me when I asked about something similar. :D

She does eat low fat / non fat Greek yogurt but that's bc she prefers the taste of it and won't eat the full fat kind.

For the same reasons you have listed I had planned to stay on whole milk. But at her 2 year appt her ped told us they recommend switching to 1% or skim for heart disease prevention.

As soon as he told us that it was a no brainer. There is a lot of of heart disease and sudden death from heart problems in both our families.

There is a ton of processing in whole milk, even organic. The best is really to go with either raw if you're brave enough or a low temp pasteurized non homogenized milk from a local dairy. Budget made us switch to organic but now that she's drinking less maybe we'll switch back to local.
