In theory I am against it.

However, there is a kid at the playground who is always really rough and pushing my kid and other kids around. Yesterday I witnessed this boy try to scratch my son in the face near his eyes. His mother usually sees and never does anything at all. I would never actually say it, but I want to tell my son that he can hit back if this kid is hurting him. Instead, I've told my son that the boy is not very nice and he doesn't have to play with him if he doesn't want to.

I wouldn't encourage a child to hurt another child. However if, say, my LO bit someone and they bit her back, I'd just file that under "natural consequences."

@yoursilverlining: & @MoonMoon already said my thoughts. I rarely say never, especially in regards to parenting, but I would never do that. @Rockies11: that makes me queasy :(

@Rockies11: that is really fucked up and abusive. I think that is horrible of her to make you do that. I am sorry you went through that.

@luckypenny: I don't think it is healthy to make you bite her. It doesn't even make sense. Even for an adult that seems like twisted thinking. I agree with @yoursilverlining:... but I can't imagine acting that way as an adult- revenge is not a part of healthy relationships.

@Rockies11: that is so upsetting :(

I don't believe in retributive justice, because I don't want to live in a culture of revenge/violence. So I wouldn't teach that to my kid, either.

I don't believe in it partly because I don't think that revenge is really a concept I want to teach my kids, but also because I have a horrible memory as a child of being forced my my mom to bite my sister. I didn't want to but she threatened to spank me if I didn't bite my sister, so I did, and it apparently wasn't hard enough so she made me do it again. I cried the whole time and I still remember the sensation of biting her. And she still bit people after that, so it didn't work either. I think younger kids bite because they feel powerless, and that's an issue that should be addressed by positive parenting, not inflicting pain and further powerlessness.

NO. Children are children; they don't reason like adults. I don't think it's a lesson, it's just them getting bitten by someone they love and trust. No thank you.

@MamaMoose: Exactly this. We had to resort to biting my oldest lo back (it only took once) but I would never want someone else biting my child :/

I'm sure it "works" sometimes, but it isn't a method I would choose.

I think it was inappropriate for your sister to ask YOU to bite her daughter. If biting becomes a serious issue for us I would be willing to consider the biting back technique but I would NEVER ask or let anyone else to bite my kid.

I don't always. I used to work in a school where there were a lot of fights, some provoked, some not. I can't necessarily sit here and say if you're getting your ass beat you shouldn't fight back.

I was just thinking about an incident from childhood and wanted to know what the bees thought:

When I was 6 my niece, who was 3 at the time, bite me in the stomach while I was putting crayons away and even drew blood(!). Her mom told me to bite her right back. She never bit anyone again. I don't remember this happening or how I felt at the time so I'm not sure if I completely agree or disagree with my sister's decision.

Do you believe in an "eye for an eye" in some cases? Or is this total crazy talk?
