I started with vulva but realized that everyone else seems to use vagina so I've kind of used both. Contrary to @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I have a girl, and pretty much all she wants to talk about are penises. I think it's because of all the babies and kids we've taken care of since we've had her, all but our current newborn have been boys! She actually was under the impression that all babies were boys for a while. Oops!

I say vagina. I'm not even sure I really know that medically it's vulva.......

We use vagina because it’s the more common term. I cringe a little and would probably use vulva if it were 100% up to me. But DH calls it vagina, and my side of the family will probably never stop saying cootchie. So it’s all a battle for me and in the interest of continuity, vagina it is. DD1 knows it’s a vagina but still prefers to call everything her privates.

Vagina, I've never used vulva. DS calls it a 'gina'.
His Penis is his 'peiner' (penis/weiner combined)

Everything was "butt" until about when DD1 turned 3 when I started referring to it as her vulva. It's the correct term for what we're referring to and I don't personally understand why vagina would be better - it's actually the more "sexual/reproductive" part of the body so to my mind, the vulva is a less charged word anyway. I think I've only rarely used the term vagina with her, but only because it doesn't come up.

@lady baltimore: yep my 3yo boy used to call everything down there buns. He knows the word penis but I think his sister is more likely to use it as he prefers “fire hose” so he can “put out fires” while peeing standing up :silly:

We also say vagina ... close enough!

I would use vulva because it's technically correct and I'm a biologist... but according to my 19 month old right now, everything under her diaper is just called "bum".

We say vagina bc it's more common. I don't need my kid to nerd out on the playground by correcting other kids on that topic! He is only four. He can get more precise later when it matters more.

In other news, I am 28w pregnant so we have been talking a lot about babies in bellies, etc. Yesterday at breakfast he asked specifically, for the first time, how the babies will exit my belly. So I told him they will probably come out of my vagina. He laughed sooooo hard, I think that was the funniest thing he heard all day. I hope his questions don't get too much more precise for the time being :silly:

@helloperidot: ditto to everything. Totally cool with vagina, anus, penis, throw clitoris in if you have to, but I think I have only even said the word vulva one time in my life. Haha

I hate the word "vulva" so we've taught our daughter "vagina". I know it's not correct but it's close enough for me.

Do you teach your kids vagina or vulva? I have been saying vulva because I want to be accurate but I haven't really seen anyone else say that, and I got curious! To add to the detail, it particularly seems more accurate because so far it's been for my son in comparison of himself and his baby sister.
