Update

It went really well! The lovely tech had a beautiful French accent and she hummed softly throughout the scan, pausing to say yes, looks good and very well. It was so soothing lol. Everything looks great and I couldn't be more relieved. Babe was curled up in a ball so we didn't get great pics but honestly I could care less, I'm just so happy about the outcome.

Thanks again to those mamas who shared their knowledge and stories!

@Autumnmama79: I was more nervous the second time around too.

If a tech is doing your scan they won't say anything and you will get a follow up call from the doctor if need be.

FYI, we had a few things turn up in our scan that were potential soft markers, but turns out they are pretty common and turned out to be nothing. The technology is almost too good now!

Good luck!

@Autumnmama79: try not to stress too much and enjoy seeing your baby. Everyone above has pretty much covered what your sonographer will be looking at. We call them at work a fetal anatomy survey, we literally look at everything on the baby, from parts of the brain to toes, and everything in between. Also your cervix, placenta, fluid, and umbilical cord.
A lot of the soft markers for downs and other chromosomal disorders are based on measurements in the brain anatomy. @PawPrints: covered some of the other visible markers, but it's most likely that your scan will be fine!

Good luck today!

@Autumnmama79: Another name for the anatomy scan is the anomaly scan -- I think of it as just that: they are looking completely at the baby and the placenta to see if there are any anomalies (aka anything out of the ordinary). A lot more is formed at 20 weeks (hence why they are usually strict about not having it before then) and it's the best time to identify potential flags.

@Autumnmama79: Yeah the NT scan is looking for Down's but it's also possible to miss it in the NT scan and find it at the AS. It's possible to find other serious stuff at the AS as well. Someone with actual medical knowledge should chime in here to answer your question, but our AS found an echogenic bowel (that was the soft sign for Down's) meaning a bright spot on the scan. I think someone else on the boards found Turner's at their AS as well? They are basically looking for everything. Try to relax though, it's likely everything is fine!

@PawPrints: So they are looking for downs at the AS then? I thought that was at the NT and or/blood work. Do you know what markers they are looking at AS?

I was actually going to suggest the opposite - I think it's better not to ask the tech if everything looks okay. They aren't allowed to tell you if they do find something suspicious and you're going to go insane wondering how serious it is if they seem concerned at all. At my AS, the tech found one soft sign for Down's and I could sort of tell she was a tiny bit reserved in responding to our excitement but I didn't worry about it much. My midwife explained it thoroughly later, and I felt very reassured after that conversation that the increased risk was very very tiny. I would have gone nuts if the tech had given me any indication there was the slightest thing wrong but couldn't explain the details to me.

I was very nervous and had to have a second one because my babe was snoozing and wouldn't move and they needed pictures of some of the heart and legs and feet. I had been too nervous to eat or drink for about two hours before the appointment). I would suggest eating and drinking beforehand so that you can try to prevent that from happening because that added more stress for me.

As @sslm: said they check all body parts and take measurements for all of them too. They also check your cervix length, placenta, umbilical cord, and blood flow to the baby. My first ultrasound tech wasn't very comforting so I left not knowing if everything was okay. At my follow up two weeks later I had an amazing tech who kept saying how good everything looked and told me exactly what she was looking at or measuring and I left feeling amazing. We didn't want to know the sex so she steered away from that area and it was a positive and relieving experience. I also drank juice on the way to my appointment and my baby was a bit more active that time, but still pretty snoozy.

So my other suggestion would be to ask the tech if everything looks good. They might not tell you, but it's worth a shot.

Good luck and enjoy. You'll probably feel great after. Don't worry about what could be wrong until you hear otherwise.

From what I remember from my 1st two - they check amniotic fluid levels, they measure the baby (head, certain limbs like femurs, etc), they look at the heart to see if it looks ok. I think they may already be looking for practice breathing and certain baby movements. I remember they even counted fingers and toes. They check the face/nose are for cleft palette. They look at major organs.

Eta: They do look at the placenta and cord too. They also may check up on anything from a previous scan. I had a fibroid tumor of something and they checked to see if it grew.

I'm sure I'm missing stuff. It took about an hour and the tech would tell us often what she was looking for. A lot was just measurements and snap shots.

@Autumnmama79: I think it's normal to be nervous! I was!

They basically check every organ. They make sure the heart has 4 chambers for example. I just saw my report today, it listed pretty much every organ and then said all was normal.

They also check the placenta and where the umbilical cord goes into the baby, presumably to make sure there is enough blood flow there...

And I'm sure they do a lot more that I didn't notice :)

I am going for my anatomy scan today and feeling nervous. With Lo1 I was happy and pregnant and oblivious really. I've been worried since the get go with this one and with every milestone I worry a little more.... It might help me I know exactly what they are looking for.

Does anyone know specifically what they are looking for at the 20 week anatomy scan? What bad things could they find?

Thanks for the help.
