@mrskansas: Portage Glacier is an easy day trip. About an hour from Anchorage, there is a boat tour (about an hour long), and some cool things for kids to see as well (an artificial ice cave and (live) ice worms).

@Lahela017: Yes to the SeaLife Center and Exit Glacier!

If you can stop in Girdwood (on the way to Seward), the Alyeska resort has a tram that will take you to the top of the mountain. If it's a clear day you get amazing views of Turnagain Arm and some glaciers. Definitely worth a stop!

@mrskansas: We also went to the Anchorage Museum. It was very interesting!! I'd highly recommend that as well.

@travellingbee: In Seward, I would check out the Alaska SeaLife Center. We really enjoyed that too, and it would be perfect for kids. Its small, but very nicely done. Also go to Kenai Fjords National Park and do the walk to Exit Glacier. I think it was about 0.5 miles each way, but you get right up next to the glacier. Even if you don't want to do the walk, you can drive there and they have a nice overlook of it along the road.

@travellingbee: Seward is a neat town! I do have to say that the prettiest parts of Alaska are north though. If you ever go back and want to make more of a drive, taking the Glenn Hwy from Anchorage to Fairbanks is the absolute best road trip with the prettiest views I have personally ever seen (especially on a clear day!).

I have tons of suggestions but they are all farther than an hour from Anchorage. That's what is tough about Alaska... it's huge so everything takes so much time.

The Anchorage Museum is cool and good for kids. There is a reindeer farm in Palmer which is just north of Anchorage.
Check out Bear's Tooth Theatre for dinner & a movie; it's apparently voted one of the best places in the US.
Thunderbird Falls is a good hike that would be fairly easy with kids.

@mrskansas: we would be there (Alaska) for a week, but probably wanted to drive down to Seward for a couple of days. Nothing specific... just kid friendly things--little kids (2&5) so no strenuous hiking but we don't mind short drives out of town (less than an hour)

I've been there countless times but not with kids.

How long are you going to be there? What kind of activities do you have in mind?

We don't have kids, but DH and I were there in May. We went to the Alaska Zoo and really enjoyed it. I would think it would be great for kids (we also saw a lot there!). They have mostly native Alaskan animals and the zoo grounds were really unique/interesting. It also wasn't huge- We did the whole thing in 1.5 or 2 hours.
