My toddler had low iron at her 18mo and 2 year appointments. We’ have been doing a combination of making sure that she eats more things like ground turkey (she doesn’t seem to like ground beef), iron supplements (we’re ok with it because she eats lots of fruit and a decent amount of vegetables so constipation isn’t an issue). After experimenting I found she like homemade kale chips, so that’s another way to get a green leafy vegetable in her.
Good luck!

@regberadaisy: thanks for this info! I did a search on anemia on the boards and didn't find much, but didn't think about searching for low iron or ferritin!

Tons of great info in this recent thread.

DD1 was at 5 for a while. It took us 9 m of iron supplements at the highest amount for her weight plus iron rich foods at every meal to get it up to a 9. But she has thalassemia trait.
DD2 is at a 9 at her 9m check up. We've been battling constipation since starting solids but will still be giving iron along with iron rich foods.

When iron is low, it's hard to get enough with food. We did drops for a long time and did not have a major issue with constipation.

What's his level at? Leafy green veggies are high in iron. Cooking things in a cast iron increases iron content. Do a board search - tons of thread on low iron.

Meat, fish and poultry are the most easily absorbed by our body.

We did iron drops every few days with my 12 month old and iron-rich foods (she eats anything though!) and her iron was fine at 15 months that the doc said to stop the drops. Can you do green smoothies? What about iron fortified cereal?

Just found out one of my 2-year-old twins is anemic. Our pedi is recommending iron supplements BUT he has had issues with constipation, shows no outward symptoms of anemia and I am just feeling hesitant about them. He does not eat meat. Will not try one bite, is very physically strong and will contort himself in a way that no meat will ever come within two feet of his mouth. Tips on ways to help increase his iron intake? Doing more googling but thought I'd check here!
