@MrsTricycle - I was just looking at lilsurgar's website and they have a post of new baby products coming out and there were a couple of breathing monitor's on there. Safetosleep is one, comes out in December...looks like a more reliable monitor. When's your LO due? I'd hold out if you can.

Just bought the foscam two weeks ago and love it. We recently used it while DH and I were on a date and checked up on our LO when he went to sleep. If you have questions you can comment on the guest blog post about the foscam. She has a lot more experience and can answer your questions. It's also very affordble ($90 or less on sale) and pretty easy to setup too.

@Mrs. Tricycle: We had one false alarm, and fixed the sensitivity.
We also had one nap where the alarm kept going off (3 times he stopped breathing!). He was turning grey!! We were able to figure it out because of the monitor and he is fine now.
We CD and swaddled for a couple months.

We didn't get the video one, just sound and motion.

ETA He likes to snuggle with the crib corner, too, but since we have a mini crib we have had no false alarms since the first one (in retrospect if may not have been a false alarm).
Once the warning bell went off and it scared LO into breathing. I heard the huge gasp. Again... LO was born by c-section after a long labor with meconium in the water... he was at risk for respiratory issues.
Also their customer care is AWESOME. One day the parent monitor wasn't connecting with the nursery monitor; I called them, and they sent us a new nursery monitor right away (no charge).

@Mrs. Tricycle: not positive. There are some different apps, so it could be a possibility. We also have the Summer Infant BabyTouch monitor, and love it. The sound stays on and its the same size and shape as my iphone.

@livsmama: we got the foscam but could not get it set up. We spent several hours working on it and never got it working! So bummed that we had to return it!
I registered for a different movement monitor that comes with 2 sensors hoping that will reduce false alarms. It is by Baby Sense. It seemed to have good reviews.

My friend splurged on the angel care monitor but her little guy was such a bad sleeper, she's never used it since he's always slept with them! So in her case, it was a total waste of money. She totally regrets it. I like the look of the Summer Infant touch monitor (or whatever it's called...)

@theknest: have you considered moving the sensor pad closer to the end of the mattress where LO sleeps? Liv went througha period where she only slept at the foot of her crib, so we moved the sensor pad down to that end. Worked until she went back to her normal sleep habits

Angelcare video monitor and Snuza purchaser, right here. I'm not very thrilled with our Angelcare monitor. Our LO only likes to sleep all nuzzled up in the corner of the crib - so we've had SEVERAL false alarms in the middle of the night (worse feeling ever). We turned the sensitivity to the highest setting so it would reach those corners but then our ceiling fan on LOW was enough to keep it from going off. So we don't use the movement monitor part anymore - just the video, which is nice to have.

We purchased the Snuza for travel and for the sitters. We chickened out asking our sitter to put the Snuza on at naps and would forget to put it on our LO when we traveled and feared waking him up by putting it on him. Plus we had a stomach sleeper from early on. :-\

So not much help on that one. I would say both are great for baby's that aren't too mobile. The good news is by the time they are fairly mobile the SIDS risks go down some. I'm a super paranoid person and don't regret our purchases just hoping there are better options when we have baby #2. ;-)

Oh right! I forgot about the snuza - that might be a great solution, as I think the baby will probably sleep in the RnP for the first month or two, anyway.

I did a quick check, and it looks like it works with both cloth diapers and swaddled - but does anyone have any first hand experience with this?

i haven't used one, but i've heard good things about the snuza monitor that you attach at the waist of the diaper so you don't have to worry about baby rolling off the sensor or using it in a different location. one of their versions vibrates if the it senses the baby not breathing to try to get the baby to breathe. something else to look into if you're interested =)

When they were so little that I was worried about their breathing, they were in our room next to me, and could hear them or watch for their chests moving up and down. They've been in their own room since about 2 months, and at that point I was much less nervous about them while sleeping, so we just have a standard monitor. I think any false alarms would just freak us all out. And the cost was pretty prohibitive for us too, since we'd need to buy two systems. But had our kids been preemies or had other health/breathing concerns, I probably would have considered it more seriously.

@chrispygal: adjusting the sensitivity is super easy. Its just a little knob on the back of the bedroom unit. It goes frm 1-5. We set ours to 5. I would suggest though, setting it to whatever setting you plan to have it, and turn it on with an empty crib to be sure its not detecting vibration from a fan or anything. Ours never did, but a friend of mine realized her ceiling fan was enough motion to activate it. Sheturned it down to 4 and that was sufficient. When babies get into a deep deep sleep, their breathing is much slower and deeper, so there is less movement. Its those times that the sensitivity needs to be turned up for

My hubby had to have the angel care monitor, and so he bought the one with two pads (supposedly to reduce false alarms) and totally wired up her crib. A few nights into it we did start to get the false alarms and I will tell you, there is nothing worse than that alarm going off in the middle of the night! Scared me to death. Supposedly you can adjust the sensitivity level but we've yet to do that and LO has been sleeping on top of a $300 system for nothing. :\ This has reminded me to get on DH about adjusting the sensitivity monitor so we can give it another shot. I love the idea of it and if we can get it to the right spot, I'd be an advocate for sure. Obviously it's not 100% needed, but it is a peace of mind thing.

I have an Angelcare and LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Liv still uses it now at 15 months old. Seriously, I cant sleep without knowing its on. We even travel with it. Ill continue to use it until I cant anymore. We use it in conjunction with a video monitor (they didnt make the combined one when we got ours.)

I only had one false alarm before Liv was really mobile, and Im not sure how false it was. It went off, but she was laying right on the sensor. I picked her up and shook her (not like a voilent shake, but a "WAKE UP" shake) and she woke up a few seconds later... It still scares me to think about. It will go off now sometimes because she crams herself all they way up at the top of the crib. But to me, false alarms would have been worth the peace of mind. I was (am) very anxious about SIDS and the unthinkable, so it provides a huge peace of mind to me.

I do know they make models now with 2 sensor pads that connect, so it covers more surface area of the crib for less false alarms. The standard one was fine for us, but Id consider that one for our next LO

My sister in law has it and well as my BFF...both have had it for over a year and the only time they said the alarm has gone off is when they went to get LO in the middle of the night to change/feed and they forgot to turn it off. They both LOVE it and swear by it. Its the one I will be getting. I have been to a funeral for a friends baby who died of SIDS, I dont want to be that mom up there. I think the false alarms if any are worth it. I read some reviews where a person had some false alarms and then one time they went and it wasnt a false alarm and it saved their LO life.

My BFF has the angelcare monitor and hates it, for the false alarm reason. Are you planning on having the baby in your room at all? For the first 5.5 months, DD was in our room right next to me in her bassinet, so I could hear her breathing, and after that the video monitor we got works awesome.
