@brownie: I understand. If it was vital that I had someone local, I'd just pick them as my OB without a preconception appointment if I was already pregnant. But it sounds like the drive doesn't bother you so holding out for a better fit that might be farther away should work better. And you're right, if they can't figure out the scheduling for a preconception appointment, I would be nervous about how they'd handle my appointments once I am pregnant, when timely prenatal care is vital.

@meredithNYC: Eh, we travel for everything. My son goes 3 hours for gastro appointments, my husband goes 4 hours for his CF clinic, we go 4 hours for our IVF. If we end up with multiples (possibility) we won't be in town for appointments anyways.

I take my son 2 hours away every Sunday for soccer lessons. So driving isn't the biggest issue. I don't work in the mornings starting in September.

@highwire: I can't schedule my FET appointments until my next period which should be around 7/28 but could be any time around there. Then I have an appointment on day 3 then when they tell me to come back. It isn't something I can plan for. If I call back then, I won't have an appointment until September. At that point it doesn't matter for a preconception.

I don't want to go to a place that can't figure it out because when I'm pregnant it's even more important.

@brownie: Oh okay, I see! Maybe you can call them back to schedule something once you have more of the appointments scheduled at the IVF clinic? I'm just grasping at straws here, but maybe that might work?

Yeah, I was going to say the same as @highwire. I know it's frustrating, but I would try and get the appointment rescheduled even if it's not convenient because honestly, there is no way you want to go somewhere that's too far away. You have soooo many OBGYN appointments when you're pregnant that it would be extremely annoying to have to travel that much, I would think.

@highwire: I can't guarantee any dates so I could make an appointment just to have it pushed back another month when I have to go in for a treatment that day. Our IVF clinic is over 4 hours away so it isn't like I can schedule them together or anything.

This seems to be really common at doctor's offices. Can you still go to a pre-conception appointment at their office, even though you will be doing your FET?

Since they are new they are probably working out their scheduling system and are probably busy since everyone wants to schedule with them instead of the c-section happy other doc.

Just a vent. So we are going to do a FET (frozen embryo transfer) in August and hope to be pregnant soon. My tiny town has 1 OB/GYN who likes to cut (I am terrified of him). So when I found out we had a new OB I called to make a pre-conception appointment to see if I would like them enough to be released to them if we get pregnant (I have to be released to an OB).

Well I made the appointment last month. Originally for Tuesday at 8:30 am. Then they called back and had to reschedule due to a surgery. So we changed it to Thursday. They had a 10 am but I said I couldn't do it so they found an 11:00 am. Or at least that is what I was told.

Today they call back and my appointment was 10:00 am. I can't do 10:00 am because I only work from 8:30 - noon on Thursdays. 10:00 am doesn't make it worthwhile to go into work. All the people could say was "Well we have 2 people at 11:00 am". That's great. But this isn't my mistake you told me 11:00 and somewhere that changed. Of course they can reschedule me for over a MONTH later. The month when I can't guarantee anything because we are doing our FET and that is dependent on when my period starts and when things get to the right points.

I am just so angry and upset that they did this. I was so excited to try the new OB and have other options but obviously that isn't a choice. So now I have to go out of town to find an OB and have my baby. A town that I have no recommendations or anything in. A drive of over 1 1/2 hours instead of the hospital that is 5 minutes from my house.
