@ladybee: so she wouldn't actually even be providing services, just observing him? In that case, I agree with asking about monthly check ins or something at less frequent intervals than what you have now.

My LO is 18 months and also in PT, but mostly for low tone and motor planning issues. Both our PT and pediatrician noticed moderate ankle pronation and now he's wearing orthotics to help with it.
S will continue with PT for his other issues, but it hasn't sounded like she will be doing much specifically for the pronation besides checking on it.
Can you reduce your PT sessions to monthly as check-ins of progress? That way it's cheaper and M doesn't have to go through a ton of unnecessary actual PT sessions, but you still get monitoring. It's pretty typical to taper off sessions before stopping completely for most therapies anyways.

Dont feel guilty!. I didn't want to get stuck in pt forever either. What if you stop going and just have your md evaluate at your 18 mo appt? Honestly I feel like all new walkers would get diagnosed with pronation/supination so I guess I wouldn't be super worried until he was walking for 6 mo or so

@gotkimchi: our pediatrician said he would not send him to pt till two for ankle pronation. That's where I feel like it's pointless at this point but my mom guilt is eating at me.

@hilsy85: at this point it sounds like all they will be doing is monitoring him and progress monitoring. We are supposed to get new shoes, put the inserts and have him wear them all the time. Besides that, she'll just watch him walk to see if it's helping.

We had lo in pt starting at 8 weeks for torticollis and we stopped going around 6 mo or so? Pt did not release is because they follow all cases until 1 yr to make sure the babies are hitting milestones. We decided to stop going because it was costing us money, lo hated it, and the issue for which we took her was resolved. Lo has been hitting all milestones just fine so I'm happy we stopped going. I wouldn't hesitate to go again if lo needed it but I do not think you have to stay because they say so. As far as the ankles go, I would take a watch and see approach because new walkers are still building their strength and muscles. If you feel like lo doesn't need to go anymore I wouldnt. I felt guilty at first, especially since my md said she would go with pts recommendation, but I'm happy I did what I thought was right.

@ladybee: hm so it sounds like you don't really trust your physical therapist/feel like she has an agenda? Is it possible to have a conference with her and someone else (a supervisor? Or other physical therapist?) to discuss your LO's progress and maybe get an unbiased sense? What is your gut saying about his ankle pronation? What does the PT say about a wait-and-see approach? Can she show you any exercises to do with him at home to improve it if you do stop PT?

@hilsy85: We are paying for it. Which is expensive but we can swing it. Honestly, my real issue? I feel like he is never going to be allowed out. Everytime we are supposedly getting dismissed there is another reason to stay. Most of which have seemed minor to me.

Are you paying for PT? Is it cost-prohibitive for you to stay? If not, I would probably stay in just in case in 6 months his ankles are still an issue and your ped wants you in PT again at that point. I guess, what is the downside of staying in PT?

M is 15 months old. He started walking at 13 months. He has been in physical therapy since 4weeks old for torticollis which eventually led to plagiocephaly which led to helmet treatment. He's been done with the helmet since 8 months.

So he was supposed to be dismissed from PT now that he's walking in a normal time frame and his neck is great. My MIL took him Wednesday for his final visit and they want him to stay on. Our PT called me and explained that he has moderate-severe ankle pronation. She placed supportive insoles into his shoes and wants us to get athletic, stiff shoes for him. She mentioned other issues being related to this so I called our pediatrician. Our pediatrician is not concerned about his ankles or pronation at all since he's just started walking. He said to pull him out of PT and tell them we would re-evaluate in 6 months.

I'm so torn. I love our pediatrician and trust him with M's life (which we've literally had to do). I like our PT but my husband feels like she's looking for perfection and reasons to keep him.

What would you do?
