@SweetiePie: We did! I’m so bad about coming back to update threads. We ended up booking Chicago, we were there in November and it was lovely and we feel like there is plenty more to see and do (and eat! My favorite part haha).

I did want to go somewhere new and we both voted Montreal but the flight times meant we would have wasted an entire day so we’ll have to plan another trip for that. We’ll be in Chicago before lunch so it’ll be nice to maximize our kid free time!

@Jennibenni: I adore Montreal! There’s a lot of great food, including a surprisingly good Chinatown, it’s really walkable, and the old port is SO beautiful. As others have said, almost feels like you’re in Europe (although Quebec City is better if you’re looking for a European vibe). There are also lots of good activities for littles—the science center is fantastic—if you’ll have them. If you do end up there, and you’re under 30, the museum of fine arts is free for anyone in their 20s or younger and has a pretty decent collection. Plus Canada is cheap because our dollar is stronger than theirs by about 25%.

Toronto might be more accessible flight wise (it’s the hub in eastern Canada). And also has really good food. Not just the typical farm to table, but also the sort of diverse/immigrant neighborhoods and global cuisines that you expect in major cities.

@Jennibenni: oh fun! I mean, NYC is great if you haven't been before. You can walk a ton and explore and there is so much to see & do, AND EAT!

Montreal would be amazing too, might be a little more complicated flight-wise but it would feel like a real getaway, it almost feels like you're in Europe when there!

I would also recommend DC - we just did a few nights there last year and saw and ate a ton. It was excellent!

PS - I wouldn't recommend Cleveland, I was just there for the first time and didn't find it a walk-able city at all, and besides the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and one tiny street of restaurants (we actually had an amazing dinner there) I didn't find there was much else to do downtown at all if there wasn't a sporting event happening.

@Jennibenni: @lioneyes: also nemacolin is supposed to be ridiculously nice. I’ve also never been but it’s on my bucket list to go with my mom and sis. It’s expensive though so heads up!
Another option that’s driving distance is the Omni Bedford Springs Resort after falling water. It’s GORGEOUS and so cool. The original building was built in the 1800s and they just expanded off of that. The architecture is very cool (looks like an old plantation or something) and they have pictures throughout of the Resort in its early years. Lots of good restaurants in the area too. They have fire pits with s’mores and wine. The spa is incredible. I’ve been to many all over the world and it’s in my top 3.

@lioneyes: I was coming to recommend this as well. I’ve personally never been to falling water but I’ve heard from many friends that it is incredible. Brad Pitt helicoptered Angelina Jolie in to see it :silly:
And my husbands extended family flew in from Israel for our wedding in Pittsburgh and they all took a couple of days to go see it. They loved it.

@Ms. RV: Hahaha, yay for Aug 2015 moms! I actually grew up in Fayette County, then moved to Boston for 10 years, and then moved back to the Pittsburgh area after my kids were born. So I would still have been in Massachusetts then, which is why you didn't know!

Pittsburgh has direct flights to Iceland. It is a five hour flight so not a quick one per se but definitely different.

I personally love Philadelphia to eat. Cleveland is another option especially if the rock and roll hall of fame would interest you. DC is really close too.

@LadyDi: I agree about direct flights. I miss when Pittsburgh was hub!! And you are the first local person I have run across on HB

What about Chicago? Lots of walking, eating, and I’m pretty sure there’s an architecture boat tour if you want to do something touristy. Pittsburgh has a fair amount of direct flights there. I live in Pittsburgh so sometimes direct/affordable flights can be hard to come by.

If you need any Pittsburgh specific recommendations, let me know!

We are attending a wedding in Pittsburgh in May that's the week of our anniversary, so we'd like to travel from there and stay 2 or 3 nights somewhere to celebrate. Would like a short-ish plane ride and would be traveling home to Florida afterwards.

Any suggestions? We like to walk and check out architecture etc and we like to eat haha. Have not done any real "research" but places that immediately come to mind are NYC, Philadelphia, Montreal. (Haven't been to any of these as a couple). Yes or no on these or other ideas?

Not looking for a beach vacation as we are close to that at home.
