I'm not dealing with IF, but m/c's, so close enough I think in this case. I actually would disagree with those saying don't email. It depends heavily on the nature of your relationship, but I would by far prefer to be told by email because I don't have to control my initial response. Trying to not look/sound upset would be hard, but I wouldn't want to make someone feel bad when they're trying to be sensitive.

Just wanted to let you all know I did finally tell my friend by phone (before I told most others) and she was so gracious and loving about it, not at all awkward. We talked about her feelings and mine and it was fine. Really appreciate your help!

That's really kind you're considering her feelings and how to share. I don't know if I've said this to you yet, but congrats on your pregnancy! You'll probably get varied responses (tell in person, share in a phone call), which shows how everyone is different. Consider what you think would be best for your friend.

And with that said......I don't mind an email, especially if it's someone I don't see in person that often and email is a common method of communication for us anyway. Like @Sapphiresun: an email or phone call gives me a chance to have an honest reaction and then move forward to being happy. I did have a friend tell me a little later than others and I could tell she was nervous to tell me she was pregnant. She kind of had a tone of pity--don't do that! I wasn't upset with her b/c I knew she was nervous and was really trying to be sensitive, but to think that someone pities me made me feel so bad.

We TTC for 19 months, and I agree that I liked to be told on the phone, and really didn't even mind email. It just gave me time to find out, and only have to put on a brave face for a short while, or in the case of email I could go be sad for me, and come back around to being ecstatic for my friends before I had to face them.

That said... at 8 months I was still pretty OK. It's maybe longer than average, but it wasn't until I became "abnormal" and started extensive testing and taking meds that other people's announcements made me really jealous that it wasn't a natural process for us.

I think @Emsmems's suggestion is perfect. Though a coffee date works fine too. Just make sure you break the news gently and not over email. Also, one on one is best.

I called my brother when we got pregnant, he and his wife have been dealing with infertility for years. I just said "I know this is kind of a sensitive subject, but I wanted to tell you before you hear it from someone else..." He was ecstatic and said he didn't want me to worry or walk on egg shells and he was happy for us. It went much better than I planned it in my head.

I think a phone call may be better because if she is upset, she may want to act happy for you but not want you to see her sadness. A phone call can give her a quick out if she needs it to take her own time to process her feelings. Just a guess, though...

One of my good friends has been TTC for 8mos and is very frustrated that it's not working for her, and very frustrated when it goes so easily for others. We talked about the process a little when I started TTC in August, but DH and I got pregnant on our first try that month and now I'm 12wks and need to tell her soon. I've sort of been avoiding it because I have no idea what to say.

Any advice on how to do this sensitively? I don't see her in person very often, but would it be best to schedule something? I'd love advice from anybody who's on her side of this.
