@pmerr: I would honestly wait as long as you can. First of all, its hard for kids to understand the concept of 9 months. And there is a risk that something could go wrong. For us there was a lot of value in waiting a few extra weeks. I think it was about 15 weeks when we told them.

We told my older two who were 4.5 and 1.5 at Valentines day last year. I set up the table with hearts and flowers and a small gift for each of them. It was a nice Corelle baby doll. We told them they had to "practice" because they were getting a new baby later in summer. It was good to tell them around then (just after first tri) because then they were excited and "got the idea" before we did the gender reveal.

I am currently 8.5wks, and just had my U/S yesterday. Everything is fine so far. I'm just debating if I want to start telling people soon, or wait another 3 weeks until after I see my OB for the first time.

So DD is only 28 months but is probably slightly cognitively advanced. We waited until after our first ultrasound (7 weeks) to tell her anything. We watched the Daniel Tiger "baby sister" episodes together (she'd seen them before but we talked about the different parts more this time) and then showed her the ultrasound photos and explained that there was a baby in mommy's tummy and she was going to be a big sister just like Daniel is a big brother.

She seemed to catch on pretty quickly and asked some questions, though who knows how much she really understands. We figured she would be telling EVERYONE (she likes to talk) but it has only come up a couple times that we're aware of. Now that I'm starting to get a little bump, she seems concerned when I pick her up that she might be sitting on the baby, haha.

She likes to talk about giving the baby her old clothes/toys and kisses the baby goodnight each night. We've shown her a few photos from Facebook of her classmates holding their newborn baby siblings and she was VERY interested in that, and I've also shown her some info on how big the baby is at different weeks.

Not sure how much this helps since she's still little, but so far it seems to be going well

We waited till we knew the gender to tell her (11.5 weeks) I think it helped her to know it was a baby sister not just a baby.

We told DD around 15 weeks because we wanted to wait until after the NT scan, and then ended up with abnormal results and wanted to then wait for the Panorama results. We didn't do any big song or dance, just one day she wanted to see baby photos of herself and we told her she was going to have a baby brother and there was a baby in Mama's belly.
I'm glad we waited bc she promptly told all of daycare that week!

I've wondered about this, too. With Graham, the twins were too little to get it (22 months when he was born, so we never had to really tell them or keep it from them). Now, they desperately want a baby sister, so they will be way more into it and it will have to be treated with more care. I personally wouldn't tell them for sure until I had an ultrasound and knew I wasn't going to have an early loss, but I think it would be hard to hide much longer than that.

I'm curious to follow and see how other people told their bigger kids.

How and when did you announce to your other children that you were pregnant? I have a 3 year old, and am trying to decide when to tell him (probably just before we tell others, so he doesn't tell anyone before we're ready).
