This sounds like a nightmare! We register for kindergarten only, and that’s mostly online - there is an in-person component where we have to show proof of vaccination, etc but last year because of covid we were given appointment times for that.

For us everything is online, even for kindergarten. Having to do this in person would really aggravate me!

Seriously dumbfounded why you would need to re-register every year.

Here, you just register when you enroll. Every year at the start of the year, they send home all the personal contact info, etc., and ask parents to either sign it to confirm or update it, on the paper.

The ridiculousness of this process continues throughout the week as the middle schools take their turn. Two of our (not big but) critical streets are completely blocked with lines of cars for 3 hours at a time for two days. There was even a bus stuck in the line.

The two middle schools are on either side of our neighborhood but fortunately only one of the two roads out of my neighborhood was blocked.

I always thought highly of my school district but this whole situation is making me wonder about how they run other things.

@Corduroy: that’s just absurd. It is 2021. No one should be requiring paper copies—or faxing, because I still see that occasionally lol. Totally agree with @PinkElephant: if they’re so concerned about a massive computer failure and also backup failure (because they must back up their files, right?!) the obvious solution seems to be submit electronically, and then bring a paper copy when school starts. Or give people appointments, because expecting people to stand in line for hours is crazy. What about parents who are working during the available hours and don’t have time off?

@Corduroy: I call nonsense (on the school, not you. I’m a rule-follower, I can’t help it, so I’d have been in line right there with you).

There’s zero reason for this process, unless you’re also picking up something needed for the first day of school. Our school did this kind of drive through last year to distribute remote learning materials, laptops, and first day packets (not to collect anything)…time slots were somewhat organized by grade/last name, but there was flexibility for siblings, neighbors helping each other out, etc. I don’t think anyone waited more than five minutes. And I have to say, as our school’s PTO president, we just wanted to get people in and out - there was no time to chat, let alone guilt trip anyone! 🤣

If I were asked to do what you’re being asked to do more than once per kid, I think I’d arrange to be conveniently “out of town” next time and request an alternate date/time. I wonder if they’d really not let your kid into school the first day if you submitted electronically and just sent the paper copies of forms then….I mean, really?!?

That's insane! We do paper copies for kindergarten and then never again. And I know at the end of the 2019-2020 school year there were some area schools that had huge lines to come pick up their kids stuff at the end of the year but our school was amazing. They spaced it out over 2 days and organized it by last names and I drove through the line in 10 minutes total. There is definitely a better way!

We do all registration online through a portal. It is the same one where we get report cards etc. it is super convenient and awesome. 85 minutes in the car is nuts—good luck fighting the good fight!

Our paperwork was due by July 15. I think there was an option to fill it out online, but since I had hard copies of forms from the doctor, I just dropped everything off in person. It took 5 minutes.

Thanks for the input. The parents are all pretty pissed so I think we might gain traction on dropping this tradition going forward.

The schools say they need paper copies of all the documents in case of emergency that takes down the computer system and they don't have the resources to print and organize the online copies of the completed documents. But if the school has online copies that would likely suffice for the first couple days of school until kids bring in paper forms, right?

That’s definitely a lot!

When my oldest was starting kindergarten you had to register for that in person, but older grades were online. By my second you could do it all online (or do it at school if you couldn’t scan forms).

That's strange that they do it all at one time. Is there some other community building thing, like meeting teachers or a PTA activity at the same time (besides the guilt tripping sign up)?
We do most things online, but we do have to turn in forms for aftercare. You can either scan them and email or turn them in in-person. But for in person, you just bring them to the district office anytime during their normal summer hours.

Oh wow, that sounds awful! I’m pretty sure we just have to register for Kindergarten, though we need to submit updated health forms annually. But even the kinder registration I was able to sign, scan, and email the documents. Nothing had to be done in person. That may be a Covid thing, though?

I’ve never heard of this. Kindergarten registration was in person but now we just update things online. Or if you move to the district with older kids you’ need to do your initial registration in person. But nothing annual. That sounds really odd.

Is annual in-person registration a thing in your area?

My school district requires elementary parents to turn in signed paperwork the week before school. This year due to Covid they made the usually walk through event a drive thru at the school 4-7 pm. I arrived at 6pm and we were in the car line for 85 minutes. My neighbor went three different times hoping the line would get shorter but it kept growing. It was way worse than normal this year but every year it's a PITA.

I just don't understand why we need to do this. We also complete a whole host of forms online before this event. I can't understand why this event is necessary except that there's a chance to guilt each parent into joining the parent's club face to face.

I appreciate that the staff was working hard and had to stay late but I'm really hoping this year's mess was the nail in the in-person coffin.

Are you doing an in-person registration every year?
