@Mommy Finger: Okay, I'm glad I'm not the only one who balked at driving a Kia. We considered it last year, but there were none in stock. They always seem to go fast, yet I almost never see one on the road. We got ours during this covid debacle and we got it $1K under msrp. Its a top model or whatever and is fully loaded. No real covid deals, though, because they have no problem selling them. VW Atlas had deals galore. I just don't consider myself a VW person, either. The Telluride beat it on paper in all regards. I am sure the Pallisade does too, but I admittedly didn't look into one of those. The Pallisade looks pretty great, though. And I am a fan of the Genesis cars.

@Becky: I would say you could try to look around to another dealer to make sure you like it and then try to see if the dealer you like can get it.

@agold: I'm laughing so hard at this b/c when we were originally researching cars, I almost immediately put the Telluride out of the running b/c it's a Kia.

The Telluride and Palisade were pretty neck and neck for us. We really just liked the salesperson better at Hyundai a lot better than the one at Kia and there were Palisades in stock while the Telluride had to be ordered. That and they wouldn't lock in a price on the Telluride when you ordered it. Super weird. Given that they only had the base model at the dealer to look at, I had a hard time buying something before I could actually see it.

We have the Honda Pilot with three kids. The oldest is in the third row in a high-backed booster, and we keep the second half of the third row permanently down. My middle child is forward facing behind the passenger and the baby is rear facing in the middle, recently moved from the infant seat. It is plenty of trunk room for us. My Honda Pilot is from 2015, so it is slightly shorter than what you would be looking at, they redesigned it in 2016.

We just got a Kia Telluride. Chose it over the Atlas because of safety ratings. I chose the Telluride over Palisade because of asthetics. Chose the Telluride over the Tahoe because of cost. Let me know if you have any specific questions about the Telluride. We really like it so far. My husband loves it. I just am still getting used to the fact that I'm driving a Kia.

We have a Ford Flex and love it. It has a ton of room in the back even with the 3rd row up. Front seats are super comfy and even the 3rd row is roomy. FYI, the 3rd row only has a tether anchor on one seat in my 2013 but that may have changed in later years.

@Mommy Finger: I really like the Palisade so thanks for the feedback! It’s really hard to find around here for some reason. We’re trying to stick with a specific dealership in the area but I’m thinking we may just need to look elsewhere.

We bought the Palisade back in October and we LOVE it. My parents also have it. They have the top level and we have one level down. I love that we have so many bells and whistles for not that big of a price tag. We only have 2 kids so we use the captains chairs and usually keep the 3rd row down so that there is ample trunk space. There's not a ton of trunk space with the 3rd row up but I think there's still a decent amount.

We also test drove the Kia Telluride and the Subaru Ascent. There was a 4-6 month waiting list for the Telluride so that was out. I was originally thinking that we would go with the Ascent but I just liked the Palisade better. It drove better and felt more luxurious for the same cost.

I usually drive a minivan but got rear ended last winter and we ended up renting the Buick Enclave for two months and I really liked it. I have 3 kids (then 6 in a five point booster, 3 in a convertible, and 1.5 year old in a RF convertible). The car had pilot seats and the back was open so my oldest could easily climb in the third row just like the minivan.

One thing was the trunk was non existent. We have the Nuna for the stroller which is kind of big and it took up the whole trunk.

I had a Traverse and loved it. We had 2 in car seats in the middle row, and my older step-daughter in the back. We often would fold part of the back seat down for that extra storage room, but never had an issue with lacking space.
The AWD was great for Iowa winters.

We did end up getting rid of it for a minivan, but only because the transmission had issues, it was a 2014. I would totally buy one again.
There are different options for that middle row, ours had captain chairs which would be a must for me.

When I said car seats I was including boosters, kids are ideally in boosters until 10-12. Some high back boosters require headrests and kids in no back boosters require head support to the top of their ears (just like adults). Many third rows have low headrests so it's definitely something to pay attention to. Or if you like to be able to latch a booster in instead of buckling it back up whenever a kid isn't riding (to prevent it from being a projectile).

I agree with a previous poster - if you are using the third row for seating, trunk space tends to be fairly small in three row SUVS, unless you look at the giant ones. You could consider a bench seat in the middle row to have the option for three across if you need a lot of trunk space.

I love my Subaru Ascent. Trunk is a little small so I keep a third row seat down.

Car seats shouldn’t be much of an issue due to their ages. We would have the younger 2 in the middle row and the older one in the back. The older one is in a high back booster. We will only ever need one tether in the middle row: by the time the baby is ready to be FF, the middle child will move up to a high back booster.

Great to know about the Traverse model years!

We’re not considering minivans. Just doesn’t seem like a good idea with all the snow we get combined with my in-laws treacherous road and driveway (people get stuck on both all the time) and my parent’s unpaved road (they watch the kids).

What seats do your kids ride in? Do you intend for at least 1 of them to ride in the third row all of/most of the time? I looked at some of the models being mentioned (Traverse & Pilot) before ultimately getting a minivan  in 2018 because I just didn't consider the third row on either of those vehicles to be a "real" third row that you could use all the time and still have room for ANYTHING in the trunk (I assume with a 5 month old, you'll want a stroller many times, and this wouldn't have left room for even a medium grocery run).

That said, when I shopped for cars, my kids were 6, 4, and 2, so everyone still had a bulky car seat. Now they're 8, 6, and 4, so with the older two in high-back boosters, I can see how a Pilot Touring edition (with the captain chairs) might work if we kept one seat folded down all the time in the third row, or removed one of the captain chairs and had your big kids sit in the back.

I don't know much about the Atlas or the Palisade but I would avoid the traverse up until the 2018 redesign. Up until the redesign there was only one tether anchor in the third row for forward facing seats but it was also so tight back there that most rear facing seats couldn't fit. The headrests were also too short (outboard) or not there (middle) in the third row making it hard to safely put adults back there.

I would look at the car seat lady and ask on Car Seats for the Littles. I do know the honda pilot is super car seat friendly and has decent trunk space.

Looks like we may be getting a 3 row SUV this fall/winter. We will get something between a model year 2016-2019. Top contenders are Chevy Traverse, VW Atlas, and Hyundai Palisade (if we can find a Palisade; I know the latter 2 are newer models). We (will) have 3 kids: will be ages 7, 4.5, and 5 ish months when we get the car. I’ve been focusing a lot on trunk space but don’t know that it’s really so important when we only really travel 2-3 times a year?

Are there any other 3 row SUVs we should consider?
