I also did the same as @rubies. I found that she would fall back asleep after 15 minutes, even though it appeared that she was wide awake.

@Rubies: Thanks! I know the book says that but I was curious if anyone here had done it!

As per "Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child", if LO woke up after 30 minutes, I allowed her to remain in her crib until the hour mark was reached. 4 out of 5 times, she would fall back asleep for another cycle even if she did end up crying for 15 minutes.

Crying is my cue that he's not done sleeping, still to this day at 21 months. I intervene after 5 minutes as well. Sometimes he's lost his pacifier or heard some kind of strange noise. Happened today, in his afternoon nap, he's back down for at least another hour.

When this happens with LO, I generally let her cry for about 5 minutes. If it's clear that she is just going to work herself up into a larger and more intense rage, then I always go in. I would say that about 75% of the time if I let her cry she will fall asleep for another 45 minutes or so.

@winniebee: I neglected to mention that he had to be in the swing for that little trick to work ;) The only other way to get him to sleep longer was the car. But around 6 months he started to snap out of it. You prob already read it, but I think I posted about this on the blog awhile back.

@Mrs. Yoyo: I can get him to sleep longer but not just with a paci - it's paci and me jiggling him back to sleep or putting him in the swing.

@cranberryapple: I hope your LO gets over it soon too! Mine's been doing it over a month I was hoping he'd be over it now....

I don't have any suggestions but just wanted to say that I'm right where you are as well! I've recently been able to just put LO down and let him fuss it out for a bit before he falls asleep on his own, but he rarely sleeps more than 30 minutes! :/ I've tried hovering over him when he wakes up (always crying/cranky) and pat his back, but no cigar! I'm hoping that he will just automatically sleep longer when he gets older. He's 2.5 months old. I hope you get some good feedback! Let me know if you figure out the trick to getting your LO to nap longer! :)

My experience at that age is that it's hard for them to soothe themselves into the next cycle. You could try leaving him (maybe 5-10 mins?) but he might just get pissier and wake himself completely. I would hover over LO with a paci at that age when he was transitioning cycles. If he woke up and started whining I would pop it in and often that would get him back to sleep.

Naps are really stressful at this age! It will get better!

I realize I've asked about 50 nap questions in the last month, but bear with me. The past week, my son has gone down for naps in his crib (yay) without being rocked or nursed to sleep. He cries a little before hand but then falls asleep. But, he still only naps 30 minutes. Sometimes he wakes happy and sometimes he wakes up crying. Question - when he wakes up crying, should I leave him? If so, how long? A few times this weeks I've rescued him and plopped him in his swing and what do you know, he falls asleep for another sleep cycle (and once, even 2!) Bad habit. Reminder, he's 4.5 months.

Thanks!
