I'll be honest, the poop contact for us is significantly higher than it was with disposables but yes, there is contact either way. As others have said, you really do get used to it, as gross as that may sound to you at this point. I always say that after years of having a dog in the city and having to scoop up her poop several times a day I am fairly immune to the nastiness of dealing with my baby's.

To answer your second question, I think most people don't even realize how far cloth diapering has come. I can't tell you how many people ask me, "So, are you worried about sticking LO with the pins?" I'm sure there are people out there who still use the old school pin method, but I haven't met them! We have Bum Genius 4.0s and they could not be easier. I also think people are just intimated by the washing and the inconvenience which, though slight, they imagine to be way worse. For what it's worth, it seems like cloth diapers are gaining in popularity pretty much everywhere, so you probably won't feel like a weirdo for long :)

Both my husband and I come into just as much contact with poop with disposibles as we do with our CDs! And really you shouldn't really need to touch it at all; give it a quick spray into the toliet and be done with it. OR just those flushable inserts, that way you just throw that in the toliet and avoid the sprayer all together.

As for the washer, as long as you do a halfway decent job cleaning the initial poop out, you shouldn't have any issues with the washer not being able to 'process' it. I know we never have. We were the first to CD in our group of friends too and a lot of people made comments about having to touch poop etc. and really it's just not true. Now a few more friends are jumping in and giving it a try. I'm sure yours will too! Good for you for being pioneers!

You will come in contact with poop regardless of whether you cloth diaper or not. It actually happens more with disposables since they leak and blow out much more than cloth. But we have a diaper sprayer so we spray off all the poop into the toilet first.

The only time I've gotten poop on me was when I had LO in a disposable. It leaked up the back & I didn't see it. I've never had a poop leak from my cloth fitteds (NB kissaluvs). As far as regular diaper changes, the poop contact is the same.

Poop is definitely a non-issue. I've even had to supplement 50% with formula, which makes poops sooo much worse, and it still gets perfectly clean.

We're still ebf so no input on poop past this stage but let me tell you I come into wayyy more contact with poop in disposables. Blowouts every time we use them and he poops - such a gross mess in clothes. We've had no issues with poop in cloth or not coming clean from the washer.

@Chillybear: @pelikila: Yes exactly this, we've gotten some of the most ridiculous comments since we've decided. People still think of those Gerber clothes that you fold and pin. The most helpful thing for my DH has been buying some diapers so that my husband could see that they are pretty much the same as disposables.

Poop is going to happen no matter what. And poop is going to be in the washer no matter what. There will be blow outs and poop gets on their clothes, which in turn means it will go in the washer. Unless you are completely against it and dump poopy clothes.... but that would be a waste.

We use a flushable liner for solid poo so I just have to lift the liner out and throw it in the toilet. No poo touching unless it's a huge one, but they're usually solid and easy to take out.

I've never had an issue with poo being in my washing machine. LO is 20 months old and we've been using cloth since 2 weeks..... so I don't feel like it would ever be an issue.

Thanks for all the responses!

@pelikila: my answer was that most people esp a generation or two older than us have a stigma of what cloth diaper was like back in the day and arent aware of the new technologies

@Chillybear: Convenience and because they don't know what options are out there now compared with when they were a baby (exposure) is probably the majority of it.

I second what @MerryC: said. You are going to deal with and "wash" poop one way or another. It's not like you plan to wash your diapers with your clothes.

I also have an HE top loader and never had an issue with poop not getting clean. I didn't have to trick my washer with adding water or a wet towel but it all depends on your machine.

I use the special washing machine cleaner tablet as needed and it's been no problem. I also agree that the kind of cloth safe detergent you use makes a difference as to how clean your diaper get as water is different from region to region and even sometimes from house to house.

His other question i didnt know how to answer "If cloth diapering is so great and cheaper than disposables, why dont more people do it?"

I literally just picked up a little chunk of poo that fell out of a CD on my way to dumping it in the toilet. Picked it up with my bare fingers. And it didn't even phase me. Yes you touch poop sometimes, but you wash your hands and move on.
I've never sprayed or swished a diaper. Anything that doesn't shake off, or come off with the aid of a clump of toilet paper goes in the wash. Everything comes out super clean and we've had no poo-clothes problems. Good luck!

When you have a baby, you are going to end up with poop on your hands :) it doesn't matter how you diaper, you will be face to face with it, sometimes get it on your hands, they will have an explosion on their clothes, poop in the bath, etc. There will be poop on their clothes from time to time, esp as newborns, so there will be poop in your washer any way you slice it!

With he machines you have to trick the washer into the highest water level, usually by adding a wet towel to your load. Even at 9 months, my kids dont eat enough solids that I have to scrape them very often. So they just go in the pail and them dumped in the washer. I don't dunk them either, just scrape off the big/thick stuff into the toilet with a plastic scraper before the wash.

I've never had poop left in my washer, but I do run a vinegar cycle once per month and wipe with a wet wipe once a weekish. A good detergent is helpful with that I think, and you run an extra rinse after your hot cd wash that gets the diapers and washer good and clean too.

I also don't think people realize that even if you use a disposable, poop is supposed to go in the toilet. So many people just put them in the trash, which is a no-no, since the poop can eventually reach our drinkig water supplies.

EBF poop does go straight in the washer. I didn't have to touch it any more than when she poops in a disposable. Most solid poops just roll off the diaper into the toilet. I give the diaper a spray with Bac-Out and into the pail it goes. If it's stickier I swish it in the toilet. Honestly, I don't understand why cloth makes people scared of poop. We've touched more poop using disposables. And really, poop is just a part of being a parent. It just is.

We've been toying with the idea of cloth diapering. So far hubs has been on board and i've sent him board posts, blogs, etc we dont know anyone IRL that cloth diapers.

He had a bunch of questions last night (he was talking to a coworker about cloth diapers) Apparently it never crossed his mind that the child might poop (?!?!).... and that he might have to touch the poop or that some of the poop would end up in our washer and by his logic we would then wash our clothes in poop.

I explained to him about EBF diapers going directly into the wash, solid food poop will get rinsed in the toilet, etc But he wanted me to ask the hive. for reference, we have a HE Top Loader.

In your experience is the percentage of coming in contact with poop relative whether you're using cloth or disposables? and have you ever had an issue with your washing machine not "processing" the poop?
