I wish the kids were a little older to do crafts without major and intense intervention. Hopefully next year!

@Artbee; Look at the typical favor bag. Honestly, most of that stuff is stuff we just throw away. There, I admitted it. I feel bad because it is thoughtful to give a favor, but by necessity it can't be something that costs very much because multiply that cost by every child at the party and... you get me. Not saying that things have to be expensive to be worthwhile, more that pretty much no kid fortunate enough to have birthday parties to attend really needs any more "stuff" in his life. But crafts have value in the process, as well as value after they are done. I think just a craft is fantastic, no child at Ellie's party has ever felt gypped (in fact, lots of them have talked about how much fun they had doing something messy or creative) and pretty much every parent has thanked us because they love having a new creation from their child and they don't have to bring more little toys home.

@Mrs. Twine: I'm throwing LO a bow party for her 2nd and was planning on having a decorating a bow table for entertainment. I've been trying to decide if this is enough of a favor or if I should get real favors too. But you think a craft is enough?

For Ellie's parties we do a craft rather than a traditional favor. That way the kids get to take home something they are proud of, and the parents love that their kids got to do something fun (and often messy) somewhere other than at home. We've done sand art, making party hats, etc.

One of my facebook friends just threw a very cute firetruck party... but of course there were no pictures of favors. I like the book idea. Or fireman hats? Maybe you could get a bunch at firehouse and then personalize them.

What about a book about fire trucks/firemen? Something like this, maybe: http://www.amazon.com/Richard-Scarrys-Fire-Station-Pictureback/dp/0307105458/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1368071837&sr=8-6&keywords=Fire+truck+book

Lala is having her third birthday at the fire dept and the park. I want to choose a favor that isn't junk and won't get tossed. Any ideas?
