we're in the tick of leap 6 at almost 8.5 months and ds who has always sttn seems to get up an hour or two earlier during leaps/growth spurts. he's been waking up at 5/6am SUPER hungry, so i nurse him. he's been going back down til 8/9am depending on the day and we just start our normal day time routine then (bfast, then 2nd nursing sesh at 10am)...

if she's hungry, i'd say feed her! it won't mess up your training and she'll go back to her 12+ hour stretches. A always has! :)

We're in the same boat. L got her first tooth a week ago, learned to sit herself up, army crawls and is rocking on all fours, so I'm anticipating crawling any time now. And with all that, she went from one late night feeding to 3-4 over the last week or so. It's ROUGH, but I feed her when she wants/needs. I'd want food and comfort too if I had all that going on!

There is also a 9 month sleep regression. You could be approaching that! Even though we sleep trained DD and she STTN at 5 months, she still had periods where she would wake up and not go back to sleep on her own. We would go to her, and the phase usually went away on its own and she'd continue on with her good sleep habits as if nothing ever happened.

I could be teeth or a growth spurt. If she seems legitimately hungry, I'd feed her.

@PrincessBaby: she could be getting a tooth any day now! M had a few bad nights a couple weeks ago where she was waking up crying really hard right after i fed her, and lo and behold her first tooth popped through on the bottom a few days later! then she went back to her normal sleep schedule on her own. so i honestly wouldn't worry about ruining her sleep training. like hilsy said, she has already learned how to sleep on her own and for long periods, she isn't going to just forget how to do that. its totally normal to have off nights and you aren't ruining anything by going to your LO when she needs you! :)

agree with the pp's, i would give it a week or so and see if she goes back to normal. sometimes i think they wake up for a few nights in a row for some reason, and then it MAY become a habit after whatever reason is was goes away. if it becomes a habit, then i re-sleep train...and it usually has worked within one night.

@wheres_c: They're getting wild, these LOs! Soooo busy now!

@NovBaby1112: Thank you- great answer! I also forgot that, while we've been anticipating teeth for a while now, she has really started messing with her bottom gums the past few days so now we're REALLY anticipating teeth! So you are right, it could be that or any of the multitude of other stuff she has going on. Thanks for all of your ST help, mama!

@NovBaby1112: I totally agree.

I think that there are a million things that can cause MOTN wakings for legitimate reasons--I know if my LO seemed hungry, or in pain, or scared, those are reasons I would go to him, regardless of whether I had sleep trained (which you know we did). I don't think H will forget everything she learned--I think it's kind of like muscle memory, where even if she does regress slightly because you do 3 nights of MOTN feedings, all it will take is maybe one night to get back to where you were. above all, follow your mama instinct and if she seems hungry or like she needs you, then I would go to her!

Ok, so here are my thoughts...the whole goal of sleep training is to get baby to go to sleep on their own at bedtime as well as after any night feeds, which it sounds like H does beautifully. As far as night feeds go, I know you do not want to get in the habit since she was sttn for you just after sleep training, but at the same time, she is probably waking up for a reason- whether it's learning to crawl, teething, wonder week, etc. I would be inclined to say that since she did SO GOOD with sleep training and sttn before, she will quickly go back to that once whatever she is going through is over. I would give it a few days or a week. Babies go through so many changes and new developments the first few years of life and I would assume any baby, even a sleep trained one, will have off nights/weeks. You will not mess up any work you did, as long as you don't allow it to go on fit weeks and weeks.

no advice - but you are not alone with the night wakeups.
B is a few days younger than H and has gone from STTN to waking up hungry during the night ( like right now!)

he also started army crawling and trying to get up on all fours/pull up this week... plus we just moved.

I've been feeding him and not worrying about messing up his sleep......I figure it will go back to normal in a week or two.

personally as long as H is still going to bed easily, I would feed her if she wakes. I think its probably just because of the milestones.

My LO is basically sleep trained thanks to extinction method/CIO about 3 weeks ago. She will still fuss for sometimes up to 1 minute when I put her in her crib but then she's out, and she sleeps 12 hours. On most nights, something wakes her up (street traffic) and I'll hear her fuss for a few seconds here and there and she puts herself back to sleep. I have always told myself that if she wakes in the night and cries for longer than 15 mins, I would go in. She has never even come close to that range, so I haven't had to. Therefore, I never got a real game-plan together for what I would do when I get in there.

The past 2 nights, she has had wakings where she cried for 15 mins. Both times, the only thing I could surmise what that she was hungry (the first night it had been about 6.5 hours since she ate, and the second time it had been about 9.5). Both nights, I picked her up and she stopped crying and immediately started grabbing at my boobs, so I didn't really know what to do other than nurse her. Both times, she ate pretty heartily.

I know that if my child is hungry, that I should feed her, but I don't want to mess up the blood/sweat/tears that I put into sleep training! And I don't want her to expect a night feeding. So I need advice on if I'm doing the right thing!

Can you help me get a game plan?

FWIW- She is 8 months, and I should mention that she has had a lot of new stuff going on lately- she's been army crawling but in the past few days has been working HARD to crawl on all fours, she's also pulling up, and just learned to sit herself up from laying down in the past few days - so lots of physical milestones AND we just hit Leap 6 for Wonder Weeks, and I'm also wondering if any of these shenanigans can be responsible for her waking up and not going back to sleep.
