@MapleMoose: I only wash my hair every other day and for that reason I can't use any kind of anti-frizz or styling cream.

Unfortunately I have to put product in my hair everyday so the longest I can go without washing is every other day. I'm guessing those who don't wash as frequently don't use products? I always wonder this. Unless they rinse/condition everyday but don't use shampoo as often. That wouldn't cut out much time for me since my hair would still need to be dried & styled with more product.

@.twist.: yeah, i understand that completely, but I just don't have the "time" to let it get gross to readjust itself! I work full time out of the home and on some of those days, I need to look presentable....maybe if I knew how to style my hair a little better, I could deal?

I have a thing of dry shampoo at home, maybe I should try using it.

@rahlyrah: I air dry my hair and I don't regularly flat iron. My hair is also not colored, so I don't have a lot of damage. I am getting an American curl in July to see if I can give it some more body.

@.twist.: It's hard to say! I feel like prior to being pregnant I had a ton of hair damage. For whatever reason, pregnancy has done amazing things for my hair. I used to need an end trim every 6 weeks because of damage and now I can go 12-18 weeks without a trim. I am hoping that by starting now I can keep this healthy look after the baby arrives!

I color process my hair as well. I try to only wash my hair twice a week. Since I started doing that, my hair is soooooooo much healthier. It works better with sulfate free shampoos. The dry shampoos I only use in an emergency.

Otherwise, I can wear my hair down for a couple of days, and the third or forth day I wear my hair in a poufy pony or a twist if I am at work, messy bun at home.

@rahlyrah: Do you find you have a lot of hair damage? I was just in with my hair girl a couple weeks ago and she was horrified at how bad my ends were when normally I have really healthy hair. She was quizzing me on my stress levels and said that can also factor in to having damaged hair.

When I stopped washing my hair every day a few years ago, one of the main reasons was drying/flat ironing and the damage it caused and it definitely helped. Now I guess I'm dealing with stress damage!

@rahlyrah: No - prevention is your friend with dry shampoo! I get the best results with dry shampoo when I apply it before bed (the night before the day I don't plan to wash my hair). It works fine if I do it in the morning, but applying it the night before makes a big difference (the oil doesn't have time to accumulate and sit overnight).

I only do every other day and I use dry shampoo on the non-wash days. My hair is mega greasy, but the dry shampoo helps a ton!! I don't think I could go a third day unless it was an emergency (ie slept in late ;))

I would also ease into it! Try every other day or wash two days, then skip a day, then wash two days then skip a day, until you can start doing every other day. And maybe hold off on the dry shampoo until you see your hair getting greasy! I can now go about once every 3 days!

@looch: I agree. I think mine needs it though. I highlight my hair blonde every 6 weeks and I use a flat iron daily. I'm hoping that by reducing the washing and subsequent drying/flat ironing that it will reduce some of the damage.

@looch: Some people definitely produce more oil than others and no amount of "conditioning" your hair by not washing it will help you go longer periods of time. The reason to try and not wash your hair so often is because the shampoo strips your hair of the natural oils and then your body says "omg! needs moar oilzzz" and so your body starts to over produce. So when you miss a day or two it doesn't register and you're still over producing that natural oil. That's why it may take a few tries for your body to register and readjust the imbalance.

It's definitely good to ease into it to give your scalp some time to adjust. I used to wash daily but started doing dry shampoo every other day, and noticed that my hair was getting oily significantly slower. So I can now go an extra day after that (using dry shampoo). My hair stylist actually commented that my hair was really healthy because it dried really fast (and I have long hair. This means the hair cuticle was very tight) at my last appointment. The only thing I've changed is washing it less.

I don't know if every hair type benefits from not washing daily. I tried to go every other day and I had to stop because my hair would get very oily. I often think that if I could not wash, it would produce less oil, but I don't have it in me to go three days at the moemtn.

@rahlyrah: If you feel like you're lacking a little volume you could either try back combing a little if you don't want to use the dry shampoo, OR just using a bit of dry shampoo on the crown of your head because it does help with volume.

I think every other day is a great plan--- I mean, if you think about it, that means you'll only be washing your hair HALF the number of times over a year! That's a big difference already I think. :)

I kind of inadvertently got into the habit of every other day too-- after having LO and being a sahm, I just stopped washing every day and over the last few months I noticed it doesn't get oily as fast. I would go ahead and use the dry shampoo on the second day if it makes you feel more put together!

So, I ran the flat iron through my hair to get out some of the bedtime kinks and it really doesn't look much different than my wash days. I think the only real difference is that there isn't as much volume.

I think I am going to take all of your advice and start off every other day (and avoid dry shampoo if I can help it). Then, once LO is born, I am going to try to stretch it to a third day using dry shampoo.

It is actually kind of liberating thinking about not spending 30 minutes every day doing my hair!

I think every other day is a good starting point, too. I think that's a big enough adjustment when you're used to washing so frequently. I started that way and can now go up to 3 days. It's weird - actually get really into the non-washing. I don't know what it is! I think it's that I feel like I'm helping the health of my hair and scalp (ugh, I hate that word) by doing so.

Is your hair curly? Have you looked at the 'curly girl' routine? My sister has really curly hair and she she almost never shampoos it-- like a few times a year! But I can't say it is low maintenance-- she wets and conditions it about every other day and then has a scrunch/gel routine that has to be done from dripping wet.

My hair is really fine and pretty straight, so I just wash it every day or every other day. Beyond that it looks bad, but people with thicker hair can get away with it.

Hm. Only from my personal experience, I would start off every other day right now.

What's your hair like today? Does it feel/look super oily and gross or does it just kinda look messy and rolled out of bed?

If it's just messy, I would see how it goes throughout the day without any dry shampoo. At the end of the day if it's super oily it may be a sign that you need dry shampoo on the second day.

I used to wash every day, and then went every other day and now I can go 3 days without washing. Day 2 I just re-style and Day 3 I use dry shampoo and put it in a pony tail.
