@hilsy85: thanks! I really think it made a huge difference! I'm excited to get him on the scale in a couple of days! He's still loading up the diapers, so I think he's getting enough. :)

@sloaneandpuffy: thanks! I'm beyond thrilled :) I wanted this so badly and I just love every moment I'm able to spend with him instead of the pump! It's definitely helped me bond with him. I was really struggling with guilt over him being a preemie and not being able to breast feed (he needed fortified breast milk and we needed to track his intake) and I really struggled with EPing and feeling like I never got to snuggle with him because I was always pumping. But being able to spend extra time with him has helped me bond and that's a tremendous feeling.

So far today, LO's had one feeding by bottle and a 1 oz top-off. He's been nursing really well and seems satisfied! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for us to keep making progress :) we're going to see the LC on Monday just for a weight check, not a full consult appt, she and I are both just anxious to see if he's gained. He seems content and he's really emptying both sides so I'm hopeful that he has a good gain!

@78h2o: thanks :) I'm excited! I really think this might be the turning point!

@aprk: thanks! He's had pacis since day 1, he's had four or five different brands, he's really not picky at all. I think him having a paci really helped his sucking. I was worried it might cause nipple confusion, but he's been totally fine switching between paci/bottle and breast!

I nursed him again at 10 and he nursed on each side for 20 minutes. He zonked out on my chest and napped for about 30 minutes. When he woke up, he acted hungry so DH fed him a bottle so I could pump (the LC suggested I continue pumping as long as we're topping him off with bottles to protect my supply). He took 2oz by bottle, but yesterday around this time he ate 8oz, so I'm not too discouraged that he took 2oz after nursing.

@septemberlove: so happy to hear this news!! Sounds a lot like A. Once we clipped his frenulum it was so different. Your attitude is so great - your determination is to be admired :) one thing that I think helped us the most was giving A a soothie. He had a pretty weak suck, I think, which is why he couldn't really get the hang of breastfeeding, but once he was able to strengthen his muscles with the paci, it really turned the corner for us.

@prettylizy: thanks! I'm definitely dreaming of the day we get rid of bottles like a kiddo dreaming of ditching the training wheels! ;)

@runsyellowlites: the hospital I gave birth at offers these lactation consultant appointments as a complimentary service, they're trying to earn a breast feeding friendly designation and this is part of it. I'm so grateful because I'd never be able to afford to see an IBCLC 2x a week! It's the same IBCLC each time and she's just been amazing. She's really been a huge support and has listened to my concerns and she even contacted the ped!

@Kemma: I'm glad we did it, I'm so hopeful that this was the missing piece and we can keep making progress!!

@mewtill: thanks :) I really wanted to breast feed and I'm so so grateful to have found such amazing support on HB. I really can't thank you all enough for your support!

It sounds like you're little man is rocking right along, too - what great weight gain! (And isn't it a nice sort of "suck it" to everyone who told you to give up?!)

@septemberlove: that's awesome about the clipping, my LO had her tongue and lip ties clipped at around eight weeks and combined with a growth spurt it made a huge difference!

@runsyellowlites: Miss A was constantly breaking suction before having her lip tie clipped and was always making that clicking noise a baby shouldn't make while nursing!

@septemberlove: YAY!!! That is SO awesome! I bet it does help him really empty the breast better b/c he'll be able to to get a better latch AND stay latched (which was P's biggest obstacle with hers). And I'm so glad to hear he was open to it & was able to take care of it!!! You seriously are doing such a great job with the resources you have! I'm excited for you & the little man!!

@runsyellowlites: the ENT was super friendly and willing to clip his tongue. I told him we'd been working with the LC and that his latch was good and he was swallowing but he was having trouble transferring and thought his tight frenulum might be the culprit. He admitted it was borderline but didn't see the harm in clipping it if the LC and I felt it might be impeding. I nursed him right after and he did amazingly well and was satisfied within 10 minutes (though he wasn't totally hungry, he'd eaten about 3 hours before, but that was still the first time he was totally satisfied). I nursed him later this afternoon and he's definitely transferring better. He emptied one and was still awake and looking for the other. I offered an ounce after we'd nursed on both sides and he'd napped a little on the right. He took about 20cc and zonked. I really think it helped, but we'll see how the next few days go. We have an appt scheduled on Wednesday, so I'm excited to see if this really has the big impact I'm thinking (based on 2 nursing sessions).

@septemberlove: Lol. Everyone agreed it was a severe tie but sadly it was our ENT that was adamant on it affecting bf'ing. Our pedi said it could & then after the ENT appt sided with the ENT & wouldn't refer us to get it take care of. He was actually upset when we told him we had it clipped! Thankful I did though b/c it made feeding SO. MUCH. BETTER!

@runsyellowlites: I'm sure this'll shock you... Lol I never asked his ped. I knew he would just say lo wasn't able to breast feed and clipping his frenulum wouldn't help. So I saved myself a trip and just went straight for an ENT!

@Smurfette: thanks! :) I'm really excited!

@MamaMoose: thanks :) I'm proud of LO for being such a champ! I know he's been through so much and for him to just latch like he'd never had a bottle in his life just amazes me!

@septemberlove: That's awesome! We didn't have any luck with our pedi or ENT in regards to P's tongue tie, which was severe (they both said it wouldn't affect breastfeeding at all) =(... we actually sought out a pediatric dentist to take care of it.

@runsyellowlites: we have an ENT appt in 45 min so we'll find out soon if that's impeding him. It's borderline, his frenulum, so it may not be the impediment. If not, then he's really just needing to strengthen his muscles and get more used to the flow/let-downs, and just basic mechanics of nursing. Either way, we'll just keep going! His weight gain and knowing the 1/3 of his intake came from nursing is a huge confidenc boost!

LO and I went to the LC today and he'd gained 5oz in 3 days! He's now 9lb, 1oz at 7.5 weeks old (4lb, 4oz at birth). Based on his weight gain, she's estimating he's taking in 24oz a day. Yesterday, 16 oz came from bottles, so we're estimating that roughly 1/3 came from nursing! Given that he's been nursing for one week, I'm feeling pretty good. I know we have more work to do, but honestly, the hardest part is not giving up. It's hard not to get down and frustrated, but because of all the support from you guys, we've kept going. So I just wanted to say thank you again :) we wouldn't be here if it weren't for you guys!

He had a great nursing session, stayed latched very well and had good swallowing. We did the weigh feed weigh and he'd transferred 10cc more than he did on Monday (52cc today). We're having his frenulum evaluated because it feels like the only roadblock left. He stayed awake really well during the appt and was sucking and swallowing well, but she thinks the tight frenulum is affecting his ability to get as much as he needs.
