i wouldn't push it if your baby is content. at that age, my LO would sleep whenever and wherever. there were times she was up for like 5 hours, and she was fine. she started to get that overtired/crankiness at closer to 10 weeks.

@Revel: The best advice I got for the first 2 months was to do what works and just survive. Looking back, I have no idea what kind of schedule we were on but it seemed to work overall! Nursing to sleep was a godsend for sure.

Thanks ladies and @JoJoGirl: for sharing that thread. She did just nurse down to sleep, I think. It's just exhausting figuring all this out while still waking to feed every 3 hrs. She definitely seemed overtired today, but some days she gets much better sleep so I don't know if she's just having a not sleepy day. I'm going to get the pediatrician's take at her appointment tomorrow.

i asked a similar q the other day and most folks said go with the flow. I am spending HOURS trying to force naps after 90 mins of awake time and LO just wont have it. I give up. try it and see if it works for you :)

ETA: http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/should-my-5-week-old-be-in-some-kind-of-routine-already

I guess I'm going to against the grain! If your LO is content, then I wouldn't try to force her to take naps. If she's not tired, she's not going to sleep!

Xander was only sleeping around 12 hours total at that age and he was perfectly content with that. When he would nap, it would only be for about 30 minutes at a time, usually after being awake for ~2 hours. He was never cranky or fussy because he was tired, so we just let him be awake!

That said, we did try not to over-stimulate him, just to be on the safe side. He spent a lot of his awake time in his swing, just looking around. If he got tired, he'd just fall asleep like that. But more often than not, he was WIDE AWAKE!

We had to get R to sleep every 60-90 min or she would get over tired and it was even harder.

I agree in trying to get her to sleep after about an hour of awake activity. She might be missing her window and then becoming overtired and not wanting to go to sleep.

I would try to get her to sleep. Does she fall asleep at the breast? If so I would just rock her for a while and then maybe try putting her down in a swing.

Try to get her to sleep. We assumed LO would just go to sleep when she was tired. Then we went to her 2 week appointment and told our ped how much she was sleeping (about 11-12 hrs) and she advised us to work at getting her to sleep during the day. Swing, swaddle, rock, whatever. It made a huge difference for us when we realized that, at that age, she needed to sleep after about 60 minutes of wake time.

LO is 9 days old, and seems to kind of fight daytime sleep. Do we need to actively get her to nap every few hours, or will she just sleep when she's ready?

There's more noise and activity during the day so maybe this is keeping her up, but I don't want her to only be able to sleep in total silence.
