okay I just sent DH the results of the poll and we removed the mattress from the registry - we can always get it later if LO won't sleep. Thanks everyone!

So much of this stuff depends on your baby. My LO wouldn't sleep on the hard pad that comes with it, but my sister always let hers sleep on it without any issues. I think it just depends if your baby will sleep on it or not.

The sales woman tried to get my husband to buy the additional mattress for ours, but he resisted because he couldn't figure out how you were supposed to travel with it.
It was the right call. Our son slept perfectly on the included base for a week straight. He was plenty comfortable. Firmer surfaces are actually better for you to sleep on anyway!

Okay so that's one 'yes'. Yeah we wouldn't bring it to travel. We just can't figure out if BBB was trying to upsell us.

The "mattress" that came with our PNP was a thin-padded, foldable thing that wouldn't have been comfortable at all, so I bought a separate mattress even though she doesn't nap in it. It's not at all travel friendly, because the mattress isn't foldable, but it's still worth lugging it to the in-laws when we visit.

I used the mattress that came with the PNP for 4.5 months.

I plan on buying a RNP for naps.

Mine slept on the PnP for the first month with the mattress pad that came with it. We never got anything extra, and still use it the same way when we travel.

I've heard the same recommendation about the RnP. I think it has to do with problems of pressure/flattening the skull. But, same issue for leaving the baby in one position for too long in any contraption. We won't be getting a RnP but I know people swear by them for sleep.

As for the Pack n Play, that seems sort of silly to add another mattress.

I have a pnp and just use the "mattress/pad" that came with it. It's hard so I put down 2 blankets. LO sleeps in it every night.
I think you're fine having your baby sleep in it until s/he starts sitting up, pulling up? Newborns just lie there.
My 5 week old is doing fine with our set up. He sleeps 8-10 hours straight a night! Love him!

I believe this is my 3rd PnP thread! Sorry!

So we went to register today and went with most everyone's rec and got the PnP w/napper/changer.

The lady had us super confused about two things though:

1) She said we HAVE to get a separate mattress to go inside the PnP if the baby will sleep in it every night. However, if it has a mattress when in "bassinet" setting (the bottom raised), it'll be too high and the baby can't sleep in there so we have to put it on the bottom! This sort of defeats the purpose as the PnP with raised bottom is close to the height of our bed.

2) She said you CAN'T have the baby sleeping all night in the Rock'n'Play?! We ended up registering for both after all of your recommendations but I swear everyone has the baby sleeping in there and she said it's only for napping... what the heck?

Thanks!!!
