I recovered quickly from my D&Cs. I had the procedure in the early morning and then rested the rest of the day. I was back to work the next day both times.

I needed a few days to mope and be sad though. I don’t think I would have wanted to go camping.

So sorry for your loss. Physically I was fine by the next day, after my D&C. Minor cramping and I wore a pad for a few days. For me, emotionally it took a few weeks before I was back to normal. But as previous posters have said, a fun camping trip will be a perfect distraction. Good luck!

I was totally fine physically after my D&C. I never had any cramping/pain/bleeding and didn't need any of the pain medication they gave me.

I was a mess emotionally but the camping trip may be a nice distraction. I hope you have an easy recovery

@Chuckles: having a miscarriage when you already have a child is kind of an interesting (?) thing. You're so busy with your son that you almost will not give yourself time to grieve. At least that's happened with me. So like someone mentioned, very random moments especially happy or sad social events, I would become despondent. For example, I went to a funeral 4 MONTHS after d&c without my son -for someone I hardly knew- and literally could not stop bawling. It was like I finally got a chance to grieve. I had very few moments to process what happened. Good and bad I guess?
Also I think the whole thing was easier knowing I did have a healthy son. That really comforted me.

Thanks, everyone. I'm so sorry you've all been through this, too. I'm glad that for most people it was physically a straightforward procedure.

@sweetiepie: your experience is the reason I'm a little nervous, but I will make sure I find the nearest hospital just in case. @emmanz: it's going to be local anesthesia and the suction version of the procedure. I was 8 weeks when we discovered it last week. Since it was a blighted ovum with a sac measuring only 6 weeks, I wonder if that will make the procedure easier, since there's less "stuff" than if there was more developing or I was further along? I don't know if that's really the case.

I have no idea how I'm going to be emotionally afterwards. I feel like I'll have had a week to at least start processing everything, but I bet that the finality of actually having the D&C will make it fresh again. For me, the fact that it was a blighted ovum and not exactly a developing baby who died somehow makes it a little easier. I *think* being busy by Saturday will be helpful, but I hope I can do it on Thursday and have Friday to just sit and be sad and do nothing. That's what I did for 2 days after we found out and I think it was needed.

For me, I would have been ok. I had mine on a Monday and went back to work on Tuesday because I just couldn’t sit around my house anymore. I, like you said, needed something to get my mind off it. I did feel pretty crappy the day I had my D&E but really only had some very light bleeding for a few days after. Hugs to you - so sorry you are going through this.

So I’ve had two D&Cs. One was Perfect, textbook, boring. Minimal bleeding but I was an emotional wreck.
The 2nd one had some complications. There was a microscopic speck of fetal tissue that was missed and a couple of days later my body basically went into labor. Like contractions on top of each other, I couldn’t speak through them, vomiting. I was about 11 weeks, so maybe it was because I was further along. But I was passing golf ball sized clots (one was much bigger) and I had to go to the ER.

So for me, personally, I would not want to travel far from home, especially in the outdoors. Like I said, I had one bad and one good. The bad was bad enough to taint the good experience.

I’m sorry you’re going through this.

@Chuckles: I'm so sorry for what you're going through. It's really traumatic. Let yourself feel what you feel.
I always say I had the world's easiest and most successful D&C. It was entirely painfree and I recovered very quickly. No retained products or scarring. I was absolutely fine even that afternoon in the next day. In fact, I didn't bleed until like 5 days after. I think that's pretty typical to not bleed right after. I was very much affected by the sedation I guess (nurses said I was a "cheap date" lol and I was out before they laid me on the operating table) and woke up wide awake at midnight that night but I don't think that's typical.
I started bleeding 30 days after, I guess it was my first period.
I think it's a great idea for you to go camping. It will help take your mind off things.

@Chuckles: so sorry you’re going through this ❤️ For me, I felt physically ok two days later but emotionally I would cry at the drop of a hat. And generally felt very fragile. I actually went to a birthday party in the midst of it all and it was this surreal awful happy occasion & since I didn’t want to share with the party people I felt even worse. Your friends sound better though! And camping of all things is probably a good idea xx

Hmmm my experience was different but chiming in... I had terrible gas pains / digestion pains and urgency to use the toilet after my d&c. My throat also hurt badly from the breathing tube. I didn't want to be anywhere but home for a good 3-4 days. Nor did i want to see anyone but family. I did have a general anaesthetic tho. Will you have a general or a spinal? My bleeding was also minor for the first few days, but then increased and lasted for around two weeks.

You know yourself and home is only an hour away so if you feel poorly you can always call it off. Don't be afraid to put yourself first.

For what it's worth (you may be interested) my period returned 8 weeks after my d&c.

I had a D & C on a Thursday morning and by dinnertime felt pretty much fine. Friday I had light bleeding and was a little tired, but went to work and did household things like normal. Sunday I went for a 20 mile bike ride and was totally fine.

So yes, unless you know you react really badly to anesthesia I would go for it.

I felt really wiped out for day of the procedure, tired and not great during the next day, but pretty much normal by end of day on that day after (physically, emotionally I was a train wreck). If you can get it done Thursday it would be ideal. Sorry you're going through it

For me, it definitely would have been fine. I wore a light pad for a couple days but maybe could even have done a liner by the next day? Not sure but nothing big going on. I took it easy that day (mostly due to anesthesia blahs) and was fine next morning to walk all day at the Thomas the Train event. And I think it was helpful to have something to look forward to and get me going. So I’d plan to go and worst case you drive back home?

I’m sorry you’re going through this though ... it just sucks

I've read lots of posts here about everyone's experiences post D&C. It's been so helpful to know the range of what to expect, so I wanted to thank everyone for writing out their stories.

I'm going back for a second ultrasound for my missed MC this Wednesday and am planning to schedule a D&C as soon as possible. However, we're supposed to be going camping with 3 other families this coming weekend, from Saturday to Monday. It's only about an hour away from our house. Is it totally crazy to think that we can still go if I'm able to schedule the procedure for Thursday or Friday? I want to still go as a good distraction and would hate for my family to miss it, but I'm worried about the real bathrooms being a bit of a hike if I start bleeding a lot or passing tissue. Two of the families will know what's happening with me, so they can always jump in to help with our DS if needed. There's such a wide range of experiences post D&C, that I have no idea if I'll be okay or not. Thanks for any input!
