I echo @looch: when LO was tiny - we didn't recognize LO's early sleep cues. We saw her yawn and thought it was time to put her down, but we waited too long and she was overtired and fought sleep.

The Sleep Lady's book helped us best identify LO's sleep cues and focus on creating a sleep schedule based on her needs. We stayed home as much as possible to focus on fixing LO's sleep for a week and it helped so much!

Our problem was a little different - she was great sleeping at night, but a horrible napper. She actually did best if she went down for a nap 45 minutes or an hour after waking up (all of the books said LO should be up for much longer before taking a nap, so we weren't looking for the cues)!

@Miss Flamingo: I know people have different levels of comfort with sleep training but I thought I'd give Ferber a positive recommendation. My daughter was a horrible sleeper and it really saved us.

We followed the sleep training in the Ferber book - there's a chart with the times to wait before going in and we followed it exactly. I was super skeptical but I was SO exhausted and desperate. Honestly, it improved her sleep by the second night.

I do think different things work for different babies and families though. My son is a much better sleeper than my daughter ever has been, and only required some very gentle soothing techniques. My daughter just really needed some intense and structured sleep training and falls asleep best by herself. Even now at 3 years old she takes a LONG time to fall asleep. She sings to her animals, rolls around on her bed, practices counting and her ABCs, it's ridiculous.

@Miss Flamingo: Have you tried having him nap in the swing? That is the thing that ultimately helped my daughter to sleep better during the day. I had a crappy napper for a long time too and pretty much every nap she took at home was in the swing. We also used white noise (the exhaust fan in the bathroom) and it seemed to help.

Good luck! It's horrible when no one is getting any sleep.

@Kemma thank you. I EBF. He does take a bottle though and I've tried giving him an extra ounce or two at bedtime. He normally wakes up between 5 and 7. I put him down for a nap 1.5 to 2 hours after wake up. He naps 3-4 times, a few weeks ago I didn't leave the house for a weeknand just tried to improve his sleep schedule, it helped in that he did catch up on sleep and we moved to an earlier bedtime (5:30 to 6:30) but it hasn't helped him sleep any longer at nighttime. The otter night he did sleep from 5:30 to 11:15, he hadn't slept longer than 2 hours in months so I really thought we had turned a corner. But the last two nights were back to being terrible. He falls asleep really easily for naps and the first bedtime but just doesn't stay asleep or fall back asleep at night. I know he needs more sleep because hestarts out the day so happy but it is so screamy at night, like a witching hour, but it didn't start until he was 3.5 months. Also, this has been going on too long for it to just be the regression.

Sorry for the novel.

Our best occasional "tricks" during tough sleep periods were the swing (fisher price) and the white noise machine (sleep sheep). In case you hadn't tried those yet.

Your baby sounds like mine at that age. She didn't have any sleep "props" either, but she couldn't get through a sleep cycle. When you say he has been crying for 2 hours, was it alone or with someone trying to help him sleep? If you meant with someone else there, I would still try a sleep training method because he might just need to learn how to put himself to sleep. We had that problem where it seemed like nothing could get her back to sleep sometimes and one of us would be up with her for hours in the middle of the night. We ended up using Ferber's method (extinction with checks) and it fixed both falling asleep AND transitioning through sleep cycles, and it worked very quickly. She went from waking 8-10 times per night and us having a ton of problems getting her back to sleep each time to waking only 2-3 times per night to nurse and then she'd quickly go back down.

If you have actually tried sleep training and that's what resulted in the 2 hrs crying, I'd go to a sleep consultant at this point. It sounds really dire. Hugs.

I wonder if you are missing sleep cues, or waiting too long to put him down for naps. When my son was small, I know I thought that yawning and rubbing his eyes were signs he was tired...turns out those are signs that you're too late and he's overtired!

Are you tracking his wake and sleep times over the course of a couple of days? I wonder if you might need to put him down earlier and that he has wake periods that are too long.

Maybe try Karp? Sounds like when baby became more aware of the world he lost the ability to settle down. It's common! Maybe Karp's 5 S solution? Try searching for a YouTube video? It's faster than reading the book.

My advice, honestly, would be to hire a sleep consultant. That's what I ultimately did when B was waking up every 90 minutes all night long. For me it was worth the money to have somebody support me and tell me that what I was doing wasn't hurting him. They'll look at the whole picture - nutrition, room, schedule, etc, and come up with a plan and then support you through it.

Do you use a swaddle?

Have you tried a white noise sound machine? My kids like them and I think it helps them rest through the normal noises of the house, dogs, us getting ready for bed/work, etc.

Have you tried a pacifier yet? Sometimes that sucking will sooth them right out.

Another trick is a ceiling fan on low. I think looking at that sometimes helps.

Good luck!!

A few questions:

What does baby's daytime routine look like? How many naps?
Formula or breastmilk?
Is baby in daycare?

Hello,

I am in serious need of some help. I have a beautiful almost 5 month old baby who was an alright newborn sleeper but starting about 8weeks his sleep has progressively gotten worse and worse. He only naps for 30 minutes, and wakes up every 20 minutes to 90 minutes all night long. I feel like I've tried everything to help him sleep but nothing is working. I've taken him to the dr and he has a clean bill of health.

The thing is it seems that literally nothing helps him sleep. He doesn't have any reliable sleep crutches, holding him, wearing him, nursing him, letting him fuss, cry, or co sleeping don't help him. When he wakes up at night sometimes he is up for hours and nothing I do can help him get back to sleep. Right now he is cryingand has been for 2 hours because he just won't sleep. I know he is overtired but literally nothing has been helping him.

I would sleep train but he doesn't have a sleep prop that I'm trying to break, he just can't sleep, I don't really know where to go from here. Any advice would be appreciated.

Also I've read Ferber, Weissbluth, and No CRy Sleep solutions and they don't seem to be helpful with my particular baby. But I could just be so sleep deprived I missed something.

Thank you!
