So there was no need to fret! I felt movement a week later and more definite, obvious movement around 18 weeks. DH felt it around 20-22? Written down as mid-may :) she was born in sept after 4 hours of labor and wasn't sunny side up, she flew right out!

I had one and I felt movement at 18 weeks and I had the easiest delivery. I had an epidural but I didn't have any pressure or back labor. I didn't know it was time to push until the doctor told me and I pushed for less than 2 min.

I have an AP as well, I'll be 20 weeks this Sunday. My midwife isn't too concerned about it and I have felt baby move since 9.5 weeks and movement has definitely become stronger over the last few weeks. I'm just anxiously waiting for my husband to feel baby as well. I've been given some great exercises to try and have been encouraged to do some swimming because that can help with positioning. I also avoid reclining/leaning back too much and spend a lot of time on my birthing ball. I know Spinning Babies also has some exercises they recommend.

@Kemma: anterior placentas commonly cause posterior babies for most of or all of labor which can cause back labor. It also attributed to poor presentation especially when the majority of labor is spent on ones back or lying down.

I had an anterior placenta but spent the last few weeks of pregnancy & most of early labor on my hands & knees or on my ball.... Never laying back. We also used a rebozo in labor to help position P straight down my belly. No back labor, despite it being almost 2 days long, & easy pushing here.

I have one too, but I don't think it's really hindered me and DH feeling the baby kicks as much as I had read. Or else, Baby Shopaholic has got a mean karate kick and I should be thankful for that AP! Only thing that's got me a little worried was reading that having an AP can possibly cause a "sunny-side-up" delivery?

I had an anterior placenta. (It actually was a good thing for our CVS procedure). I felt movement before 20 wks but it took a few weeks before DH felt a kick. I did have some difficulties and complications with labor and delivery (head was just enough at the wrong angle to make it hard to push out, long back labor, etc) but I don't think any of that was related to the placenta placement.

As long as the placenta is high enough (as in, you don't have both an anterior placenta AND placenta previa), it shouldn't present an issue. My OB isn't worried about it at all - she basically said it's a pillow that will help cushion some of the blows :-)
I've read it can affect baby's presentation during labor (anterior or posterier), but I don't think it's a HUGE issue. It just might mean you have more back labor if she's posterior.
In other words - no need to fret!

I am (just now) 19 weeks, I don't have an anterior placenta, and have not yet felt my baby girl kick. During both our elective u/s and amnio, she was super active and kicking up a storm . . . but I still can't feel her. (She was so active during the amnio that she moved toward the amnio needle and (it looked like) she reached out to touch it - gah! Not even out yet and already trying to scare me to death.) Every once in a while I think I might feel a bump or poke, but nothing definitive.

Agreed: it is such not a big deal that my OB never mentioned it either.

(I found out when I had kidney pain and they were asking if I knew where my placenta was to see if it might have been a placenta thing.....then they looked it up on my ultrasound and told me). I had suspected that I was anterior because I felt my movements later than most. If your placenta was also low, that would be a problem, but they would have mentioned that.

I'm a bit worried about back-labour with the baby facing the wrong way (I googled too!) but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

I didn't even know I had a anterior placenta until I mentioned to my OB that I was worried I was not feeling baby yet. She looked at my chart and said well you have a anterior placenta that's probably why. The tech never even mentioned it and neither did my OB till then. So they didn't think it was a biggie.

I never knew I had an anterior placenta until the last ultrasound when the tech mentioned it. I didn’t feel movement until later than many (almost 24 weeks), but now I feel lots and lots and lots of movement, all day long (and, alllllllllllllllllllllll night long). She is especially active after dinner when we’re relaxing on the sofa, and my husband feels her kicking around every night.

@sorrycharlie: No freaking out! It's a normal anatomical variation and many women have it (about 1/2 the mamas on the May babies thread!) I would just ask your OB about it for details. I have one too. it can *delay* when you start feeling movement, though I felt movement at 20 weeks and really regular movement around 21 weeks, so I don't think it was late for me.
