I would have done the same as you. Studies have shown that in most cases if docs write a scrip and have parents wait 2 days to fill it, a lot of ear infections clear up on their own without any antibiotics.

You did the right thing.

@Mrs. Jacks: Well this wasnt the first time they made me question whether or not we need to switch..and also not the first time something they suggested was not eidence based. There are only two doctors in that practice that we really like, so I think its time.

No, no antibiotic on maybe and might. I thought doctors were supposed to be a bit more careful of prescribing them all over the place these days?! Surely it's better to only prescribe a medicine when you're quite sure it will actually benefit the patient.

I rarely recommend switching providers... In fact, almost never. This however seemed intellectually lazy and I'd be a little concerned. Certainly the recommendation wasn't evidence based

@Mrs. Jacks: thank you! He was just so nonchalant about it and thought my concern about immunity when she actually had an infection was "not a big deal." I think we need a new pedi to be honest. She wasn't even showing any symptoms of an infection (to me.) ill keep an eye and then maybe follow up. Thanks again!

No no no... Oh and did I say no? Better to just follow up in a couple of days for a recheck if needed. Otitis can also be viral, so I'd be skeptical even if it was an infection.

As a preventative measure, no I would prefer to not have my baby given antibiotics.

@MsMini: if her pedi was convinced she had an actual infection - I dont think I would have hesitated on the shot. But he was waffling and kept saying "maybe" and "could" and "might" but he couldnt be sure because it wasnt too red and she barely had a fever. She also has zero symptoms of an infection. I think my issue was more with the fact that the antibiotics seem to be preventative and not a treatment

That is a tough one, I am not a mom yet, but I know professionally that injectable antibiotics are far quicker acting, and more effective than oral antibiotics. Also, when you inject the antibiotics, there are fewer gastrointestinal side effects. I think if I was going to accept the antibiotics, I would go for the injection, because it would likely make LO feel better a lot quicker.

It sounds like you did the right thing! I would also want the ability to administer meds orally and monitor to see how LO does over the next few days.

I don't think I would have given the shot. Ear infections are pretty common nowadays. I would probably just wait it out and give the oral RX. I'm not anti-vax either but I'm with you on this one...the less the better.

Heyyyy all. So Liv developed a pretty nasty stuffy nose over the weekend while we were visiting my parents. No cough, no sneeze, just a stuffy, runny, crusty nose. She was irritable today (lack of sleep) so the nanny brought her into the pedi just to make sure it wasnt in her chest at all. They called me and the pedi wanted to give Liv 2 shots (one today and one tomorrow) of antibiotic "just in case she has an ear infection" because her ear was "maybe a little red." So I asked the doctor, "you want to give her a preventative shot of antibiotics?" and he replied, "Well it COULD be a treatment. She might have an ear infection." I declined and asked for an Rx for an oral prescription so I could monitor the situation for another day or 2 before starting the course of antibiotics. Everything in me said to say no to the shot as its probably unnecessary. Im just surprised at how nonchalant they were about it given all of the antibiotic-resistant strains that are emerging because of just issuing antibiotics for everything. Its not like the shot will do anything for her cold - thats a virus,

This surprised me. I do vaccinate her, so its not that Im anti-vax. I just think that a "maybe yes maybe no" approach doesnt warrant two shots without some further observation.

Would you have given your child the shot?
