@PointeShoesTutus: we did a speech evaluation but there wasn't a hearing component. We have to go at least 1 1/2 hours away for an ENT and don't have any recommendations which is why I have been hesitant. But this newest experience causes me to think I need to try something. I hate looking for doctors.

I'm a speech language pathologist and as part of my schooling, I was trained to do basic hearing screenings and to read audiograms. If ENTs or audiologists are not readily accessible, are you able to get in for a speech evaluation?

I obviously can't diagnose your LO but it certainly sounds like there could be fluid in his inner ear and thus impacting his ability to hear speech sounds properly (the underwater, muffled hearing the audiologist bee mentioned). It could be a coincidence, but with your update, it's much more likely the antibiotics helped clear some of the fluid or relieved some of the inner ear pressure.

I'd make the trek to the ENT. He's still young enough that he will likely "catch up" quickly if the hearing issues are dealt with in a timely manner. My little brother had tubes placed at 14 months for the first time and my mom noticed a difference in his babbling within a few days. He went from grunting to producing more human speech sounds.

So, we stopped antibiotics (after 10 days) on Monday and his speech is longer (4-5 word sentences) but it is much more muffled and mispronounced. Words and phrases he started saying while on antibiotics.

I asked his preschool about it today and the teacher said she had noticed that difference as well. So it looks like an ENT appointment to see if there is a hearing problem.

When my son has an ear infection, they work super quick, like less than an hour to "take the edge off" his pain, so I am not surprised at all!

That's great on the speech!

@earinej: would that happen just from one set of antibiotics?

@brownie: I'm an audiologist! his language explosion could definitely be from being able to hear clearly for the first time (or at least the first time in a while). An ear infection, even a minor one, can make it so it sounds like he is hearing underwater/muffled. Once he gets a clear signal to hear, it's much easier for him to reproduce those sounds accurately! If you are concerned about his hearing, I would recommend calling around to some ENTs to see if the audiologists in their offices test children. Not all are equipped to do so. Good luck!

Maybe it was just coincidental timing.

@Dandelion: March last year at a university speech and hearing day. In the room because he was too little for the headphones. Problem is finding a doctor to do it. There are no audiologist or ENTs in town. There is an ENT an 1 1/2 away a friend went to but I'm not entirely sure that's the right path to go down just for a hearing test.

When is the last time you had his hearing tested? Can't hurt to have it done.

So, my son has been about 6 months behind in expressive speech and is now only 4 month away from being 3 years old. He was diagnosed with his first ear infection two weeks ago and started antibiotics. We noticed that he had a language explosion over this last week. Starting doing all of the things we were worried about. This is great and we are so proud of him.

I am wondering if that is just good timing or possibly a result of the antibiotics. We have wondered about his hearing and ears since he was very young but everything comes back normal. And until now it was never am ear infection. Because if it could be I need to pursue the hearing option more.

Any thoughts?
