I'm on Wellbutrin and Lamictal. Lamictal isn't safe, but here's what my doctor told me: I'm to keep taking them until I get my BFP, then we wean off in the first trimester. If I need something in the 2nd or 3rd, then we can revisit with a different medication. I got my BFP last Monday and called my shrink and she dropped me down to 50 mg of the Lamictal and kept me on Wellbutrin (150 mg) until I see her on Tuesday (in two days). I have a history of mild depression and had some awful anxiety a couple of years ago that led to me being on these two meds.

I think there is a risk with a lot of things. There's a risk just in HAVING a child -- genetics, randoms, environment. Like Artbee said, sometimes it's in the greater good. It's about finding stuff that isn't known to be toxic (Lamictal can cause cleft palates, so we're definitely getting me -- and keeping me -- off that).

Why don't you bring up the study with your docs, and get their input? Maybe if you're worried, you can work out a plan with them and they can suggest other options/dosages, etc. My pdoc works with several area OBs and lactation consultants, so I'm pretty secure in her expertise with psychiatric conditions and meds in pregnancy and breastfeeding. You want to feel like you -- and the baby -- are in good hands.

A few of us shared our experiences with antidepressants and pregnancy here: http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/did-anyone-take-anti-depressantsother-psych-drugs-while-pregnant-or-breastfeeding#post-12302
Can you link to the 2011 study? I'd be interested in checking it out.

I didn't take antidepressions, but I did have to take a lot of medication for my migraines. I really felt like I didn't have a choice. Migraines aren't a pain I can live with, and when it gets bad I literally think well either I take this med or I find another way to get rid of the pain, and since I'm not thinking logically the only other way I can get rid of it is to cut my head off or tear my eyeballs out. So medication it is.

I feel like you just have to try the lesser of two evils. It's not selfish of you to want to feel good, and it's probably less stress on the baby if you're feeling good.

We're about to start TTC and I am on two anti-depressants: Lexapro and Wellbutrin. My primary care doctor and psychiatrist say they are pretty safe during pregnancy -or, rather, not proven to be unsafe. But a study in 2011 mentioned a possible (not proven) connection between SSRIs taken during pregnancy and slight increased risk of autism. The risk is allegedly higher when SSRIs are taken during the first trimester.

I'm a little scared, probably because 1) I work with people with autism, so I know all about it and 2) we do have a family history of autism, so there is already some increased genetic risk (who knows how much, though).

In my mind, it seems selfish of me to take these SSRIs while pregnant if it has any chance to hurt the baby, but I know there are also risks associated with being depressed while pregnant.

Anyone else on antidepressants while pregnant? Or anyone who went off, and why?
