Completely checking out wasn't an option for me. I don't think I could have tolerated being that far out of the loop. Luckily, I chose my mat leave as a time of job transition, so I was wrapping up at one job and didn't have all the pressures of my new job yet. So I wrote a paper and took care of other duties while the little one was asleep and it made me happy and calm!

I'm anxious about it. i have 3 weeks of work left (I'm a teacher) then I'll be off for 14 months. I love what I do and usually after a month of summer vacation I'm itching to get back to work. I enjoy my time off but worried that mat leave will be a really long time! Everyone says though that being home with baby makes the time fly and they don't want to go back, so I'm counting on that!

How funny. I had the same exact convo with my boss today! I told him I might not be able to help out at full capacity, however, if he has question or needs something brief, I would be available via text or email during my leave. We're also a small department so I think he's a little nervous about taking on all the workload himself.

I was the same way on my maternity leave. I'm in upper management and my bosses depend on me for a lot of day to day things, I pretty much checked in through out my entire maternity. Even when I was in labor, I'm nuts.

I think I basically ignored my work email for about two weeks, and then I started to check in, and I did occasionally weigh in on things or call people or answer questions.

I'm worried. Well...I'm not worried about my actual job (school librarian) because I'm sure they'll find a qualified long term sub for me. But I got on this book committee with the International Reading Association and I have something like 700 free books headed to my school WHILE I'M OUT that will all be piling up, waiting for me to catalog, classify, process, etc.

It's going to eba huge job to do alone and I'm going to be so far behind! But for now I try not to think about it.

Oh Boy, I have LOTS of worries about maternity leave. Such as how I'm going to keep up the insane (for me) pace of my gig once I return to work after leave. I'm not the best multi-tasker and my husband and I are concerned about how we'll manage. I anticipate being "different" but I don't want that to mean "sub-par" so I've got a lot of figuring out to do. Good luck to you in your transition!

I'm terrified! it's just me and my boss in my department and he depends on me SO much. there's no one to cover for me while i'm out. i'm terrified to even tell him i'm pregnant, and i'm definitely scared about how things will go when i'm gone, and whether it will affect my track i'm on here when i return.

Ugh! I also feel its compounded by my fear of being "different" after I come back. I work for 3 men who all make comments about being afraid I wont be the same when I come back and I so want to prove them wrong. Of course, not at the extent of my mothering abilities but still - I want to be better than good, I want to be the "great" I am used to being and it terrifies me that if the system I have set up is ruined it will reflect poorly on me when I get back....

So glad I am not alone!

You're not alone!! I was worried at first because, like you, I created a very good system that required a good deal of attention from me. Then, just this week, I got a new job that I will be leaving for maternity leave anywhere from 4-6 weeks after starting.... meaning, essentially, I will be starting completely over when I come back from leave.

I'm scared out of my MIND.

I'm nervous! I just started at my job in September. 2 weeks after I started I was put in a different position as a sub. I've basically been in that position since, but we've been trying to get the position to be better (the previous employee was not very good and was basically fired.). The person who is subbing for me got a job, so I'm doing one and a half jobs right now. I go on maternity leave right at the beginning of the next school year, so I'm very nervous about going out and coming back once everyone has gotten into the school year. They will either have 2 subs or 1 sub & 1 new person, so figuring out all of that will be annoying. I'm hoping that when I do come back, it's not where I need to spend time fixing it.

So...call me crazy but I totally have anxiety about being away from work for 3 months.

I work in a relatively small department (thankfully we have filled one of two open spots) and I have 3 months to train the person who will be closest to "taking over for me" before I go on leave. I have serious anxiety over being away for so long and what I'll be coming back to when LO starts day care. Not that I dont trust those I work with but I feel like I have spent my two years here building a well oiled machine and am scared of what my fall apart/transpire while I am gone. I am not management level (right below it) so its not like I oversee the whole department but I do feel my contributions are a significant part of this department functioning well.

I asked my boss yesterday to please include me in emails even when I am on leave as I will be interested in checking in and may even be able to help out from time to time with simple questions.

Am I crazy? Did others feel this way? How was it when you went back?
