@Smurfette: My lo2 had the cord around her neck 5 times when she was born. Apparently my cord was super long. I have major anxiety about it all the time and was going to bring it up at my next appt too.

I think it's normal to have anxity about labor delivery. Normal the first time as you don't know what to expect, and normal for subsequent births because you know what to expect and know more about the what if's.

31 weeks tomorrow - I wouldn't say I have major anxiety but definitely worrying - what If I go early (I was 3 cm dilated at 36 weeks last time), what if she comes too fast (45 minutes from the hospital in good weather), what if there is a snow/ice storm, what if I can't get an epidural, or what if it's not as good (I felt nothing last time), scared of tearing as bad as I did with DS... it goes on.
My brain is pretty good at coming up with detailed scenarios like you described on a regular basis. ;)

@Smurfette: ooh that makes sense about knowing more of what to expect about the actual baby this time! I think last time I was more focused on whether I'd be able to labor without medication, which ended up being a moot point since I was induced!

@IRunForFun: I mentioned it to my ob today actually, but more in passing than as an actual concern. We just talked about how this time she will have me come in sooner than last time (like, contractions every 8 mins rather than 5), though since I didn't go into labor on my own last time that sounds just as hypothetical to me as it did during my first pregnancy!

Me! I'm 35w and worry a lot about going into pre-term labor and whether or not I'll know I'm in early labor, etc. Every little symptom I over-analyze and I worry about not being able to reach DH at work, etc. I have anxiety in general though so I am not too surprised and it definitely sounds like your experience with your first birth could be playing into your thoughts. Can you talk it out with your OB/midwife?

@nana87: my doctor told me that 40% of babies come out with a cord around their neck. So that made me feel a little better. I don't know why I am so more worried this time. She said that it is because you know how precious the baby is. The first time you think more about the gear, nursery, and labor & delivery. This time you know what to expect and you know how amazing a LO is. It makes sense to me. I am finding that talking to her when I am driving, other times alone, seems to help calm me.

@Smurfette: oh gosh that's scary about the cord on lo's neck! I think having had a complication last time definitely is contributing to my anxiety this time--I haven't had an issue with my fluid levels this time, YET. But it's still possible it could pop up again, even though my ob says my previous experience has no affect on this pregnancy...That's good that your anxiety is lessening as you get closer though!! Good luck!

@Oliviapope: I think that's how I'm trying to approach it too--let myself worry, and then move on. It isn't stopping me from daily activities or anything, I'm just noticing that I'm having more thoughts. And I'm definitely getting more hormonal! I almost cried today when I was fishing for a compliment from dh and he didn't take the bait, lol

I think it's totally normal and common. I had a lot with LO (I only have 1) - when I look back on it now, I think some of it must have been hormonal. I wish I'd been a little easier on myself, let myself worry for a few minutes, take a deep breath, move on. Probably easier said then done since I'm not in that position now. I had lots of what ifs around this time of year too - I was due in late Jan.

I really liked the Ina Mae Gaskin books - especially Spiritual Midwifery. I wasn't going for a med-free birth or home birth - I had an epidural and was in a hospital - but reading the birth stories portrayed in such a positive light helped me in those final weeks of pregnancy, and I think helped me stay fairly calm in labor too.

Good luck to you!

Me! 37 weeks tomorrow. LO came out with the cord around her neck, and it is all I can think about. I talked to my doctor about it it was so bad. I am imaging every worse case scenario. Stressing about about getting to the hospital on time due to GBS+. Is my sister going to be able to handle LO for a couple days? What if she doesn't answer the phone in the MOTN? (we have a back up plan but I am still stressing)

I will say that now I am closer to the finish line, it seems to be going away.

Did anyone experience growing anxieties about labor/birth during their third trimester?

I'm 33 weeks and for about the last week or so I keep having extended thoughts about various "what if..." scenarios re: early labor. Like, I had brunch with some girlfriends, and on my way there I literally had a long extended series of thoughts about how if my water broke during brunch, we'd be close to the hospital so one of them could come with me and the other could go meet dh and babysit lo...Kinda bonkers! Another one included a whole plan for if baby turned breech and I needed a c-section...

I don't remember having thoughts like this at the end of my pregnancy with lo1! I definitely had anxieties about childbirth, but not in this much detail. Maybe it's because lo1 was born early (induced early because of low fluid), and I was really caught off guard, so I don't want to be unprepared this time?? Also I never experienced natural/non-pitocin contractions/early labor at home (I've never even had braxton hicks), and everyone says 2nd babies come faster, so that's a little nerve-wracking? Also we're about to travel for a week for the holidays and it's making me nervous to be away from my ob/hospital...
