@snowjewelz: I still wouldn't trap it myself, but looking at the pic the pest control guy sent I now how he's able to stay safe handling it. There's a steel flap that keeps the buggers on one side of the cage.

Oh man! At least it worked! I hope there are no more either!

2 raccoon recently moved into this tree hole in our backyard, but it's not our tree, it's the house behind us. They are not always there though, and DH keeps wanting to trap them himself and I was keep saying no it's not safe!

Update: after posting this we didn't see the raccoon or see any trace of it. Then, last week I caught a very healthy one trying to drink our pool water. A trap was set the very next day. We trapped two in the last week and man that was an expensive endeavour $400  Not to mention the stupid air gun my husband bought and decided (correctly) was probably not safe to use in our backyard. I hope there aren't anymore around.

@Tanjowen: yes, the company would get them for us, but it's not like they are actually in the house. So the technician would have to wait for it to mosey on over to our yard.

@BananaPancakes: I'll see if he's up to marking his territory.

You're in florida, so you're going to have a difficult time finding someone to trap them because of the heat. Have your husband pee outside everywhere. Seriously. It works for a lot of animals and it can't hurt. Or you can just use a BB gun, which is what my husband prefers.

Also, I wouldn't be comfortable trapping myself because they are nasty little suckers and the rabies risk would scare me.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: $250!? Was that a quote to get them from him? Tractor Supply is a local farm supply store near us and we just handled it ourselves - not sure if that's an option or something you even want to attempt?

The trap is set up with a metal pan that closes behind them after they enter, so the pan gives you 1/3 of the cage to handle behind it so the raccoon cannot get to you. It was definitely spitting and hissing at us though! Make sure to wear thick oven mitts just in case...

@Tanjowen: did it hiss or snap at you? Our pest guy told us traps would cost $250 to place and $75 per animal trapped. Such a mark up!

We bought a trap at Tractor Supply for $20 and trapped it (it was roaming around our garage attic!). Then we released it far, far away!

Toronto is like one giant nest for a giant raccoon family. If you find a solution, I would love to hear it ;)

We knew racoons were in the neighborhood because every once in awhile we would see neighbors' trash cans turned over and rummaged. One of our neighbors told us, when we first moved in, raccoons like to take a dip and poop in pools. About a year ago I filmed two play wrestling in our backyard.

Well in the last month I saw one drinking out of our pool and it left a gift for us inside the pool. Then, I saw it resting between our ceramic planters presumably because they are cool in this heat. My husband has saw it too and thinks it's pregnant.

Well today all of the parts arrived for his pellet gun. That's his solution...blind or injure the poor animal. I know once they figure out a way into our attic I won't be so sympathetic, but for now they are just a slight nuisance. How did you successfully get rid of raccoons?
