Aww don't even worry about it! At 2 months I nursed to sleep every single night. We are now supplementing at 4.5 months, and she goes to sleep very well with a bottle OR boob. Don't stress!! I looved being able to nurse her to sleep because it was a guaranteed way to calm her down and put her in dreamland.

@jetsa: LOVE this article.

Everybody who feels guilty for nursing to sleep should read this artciel! Enjoy your baby when they're little - the time for independent sleep will come.

@jetsa: loved that article, thanks for sharing!
@MamaMagpie: we nurse to sleep for naps and sometimes bedtime if she doesn't go down on her own. She's (i'm going to regret saying this, I know!) a great sleeper and I see her wake up, suck her hands and go back to sleep often so she can self soothe... she just needs the boob to wind down, I think. It works great for us, so I don't think we'll stop until it becomes a problem.

Just came here to post the same link that @jetsa: already did.

Nursing to sleep is a very normal and healthy way for babies to fall asleep. It's incredibly soothing to them. I don't think it's a bad habit. I nurse my seven month old to sleep for every nap and after every MOTN feed. My husband does bedtime and she goes to sleep then without nursing (he gives her a bottle of pumped milk). She's generally a great little sleeper.

Please don't worry that you're creating a bad habit, mama. You're doing what your baby needs.

@MamaMagpie: I haven't read the linked article yet either but I want to as well! I don't think it helps that most of the babies on our board love sleep, so J and H seem to be the only ones not sttn but there's been a few threads this week that have made me feel better. J only got up 3 times last night!

I've just been so uptight about his sleep and I think I need to try really hard to just relax a little and stop putting all these expectations on him...

Yep, do what works! To be totally honest, LO nursed or took a bottle to go to sleep until about a year. We did a bit of nap training before then, so when it came time to stop nursing to sleep the transition was super easy. She sleeps like a dream!

I'm also going to say just go with it. I have a 3.5 month old and sometimes we nurse to sleep, sometimes she just passes out on her own. I just figure she'll break the habit on her own. She now sleeps usually 1030pm-7am, so I don't think she has any issue with not being able to self soothe, which is the concern with "sleep props".

I just wanted to point out that breastmilk is full of hormones and chemicals and combined with the self-regulatory properties of a baby's sucking mechanism, it's designed to put them to sleep :-)

Do what works for now (nursing to sleep / not nursing to sleep) and don't worry about bad habits :-)

Just keep doing what works! I nursed LO to sleep until she was about 7 months old, only stopped then because LO stopped by herself! I was told to "not make it a habit" but it didn't have any long-lasting effects for us! Good luck momma

Ugh I feel terrible :( I definitely don't expect him to sleep through the night and would never try to sleep train him now, I just had it in my head (put there by a few well-meaning people) that if I didn't start breaking the nursing to sleep habit, that I'd be setting us both up for issues later on when he was ready to sleep train. I think my anxiety about going back to work in January has made me doubt myself.

When I think back to 2 months, seems like she was such a tiny baby. I don't think I ever thought about her sleeping on her own. We still try to nurse to sleep at 8.5 months. But she doesn't all asleep, just drowsy enough (hopefully).

@MamaMagpie: oh man I second @.twist. that is WAY too early to worry about it. Seriously!! Do whatever works. Once LO is older, I've read that no cry sleep solution works really well with breaking the nurse to sleep habit, if it becomes one (it might not!) - it works well for us to break rocking.

I think at 2-3 months you can just do whatever works. I didn't start worrying about nursing to sleep until about 4 months and then we sleep trained. You're still in kind of the 4th trimester and anything you do now will not create bad habits for your LO yet.

DS just turned two months old and we are just about ready to transition him to his own room. We have several challenges to face, including his extremely strong desire to nurse to sleep.

He just went down (still in the RnP in our room) and woke up just 15 minutes later. When I tried to settle him, he just rooted and thrashed in his swaddle and was royally pissed off so I gave him to DH who didn't have any better luck. I mean, the kid was hysterically crying -- purple cry -- so we thought ok there must be something else the matter and unswaddled to check his diaper. Nope. Just wanted the boob.

Any advice? Anyone go through the same thing and live to tell about it? I'm having a hard time picturing him ever going to sleep on his own...at this rate, I'll be nursing him to sleep when he's in college. Just kidding. But only a little. Help!
